Unexpected Ways to Lubricate the Joints

By Brandi Goodman

Your joints need to stay lubricated if you want them to be flexible and less prone to injury. Drinking water is of course your number one course of action. There's quite a few unexpected ways to lubricate the joints, however, meaning you have more options than just water. Give a few a try and discover how your joints feel after a few days.

Eat Fruit

Many fruits have a high water content. This means that eating them can have an impact on the pliability of your joints. Lubricate your joints and keep them strong and healthy by adding more fruit to your diet. Watermelon is a great choice because it contains about 92 percent water. Strawberries provide around the same. Blueberries, plums, and grapes do not have as much but still provide upwards of 80 percent.

Eat Vegetables

Most people realize that fruit is hydrating to your body but do not expect vegetables to offer the same benefit. Certain vegetables also provide high water contents and can lubricate your joints just as well. Spinach is roughly 91 percent water. Lettuce, carrots, and cucumber also provide high amounts like this and are very hydrating for the joints.

Take a Supplement

Joint supplements are available that work to increase lubrication and decrease inflammation. Take these if you want to improve your joint and bone health and need assistance. These are often recommended if you can't get the vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health through foods alone. It's advised to speak with your doctor as well before starting any new supplements. You need to be sure the one you're trying to take will work right for your body.

Exercise

You don't need to put something into your body in order to get your joints hydrated. You can actually get more lubrication simply by exercising. Movement allows lubricating fluid to get pumped to where it's needed. It will spread over the cartilage and provide that barrier so your joints do not get worn down easily. Exercise also works to strengthen the joints, keeping them strong in more ways than one.

If you're currently experiencing discomfort, it's best to find an easier exercise solution. Something that isn't as harsh on the joints is more beneficial. Working out in water is a great option. Bike riding is also a solid choice. Don't do squats on land if your knees are hurting. It will only exacerbate your pain levels.

Lubricated joints can function to the best of their abilities. Do what you can to keep them lubricated well, with both water and alternative solutions. A well-hydrated and taken care of body is going to operate how you intend it, and be much less likely to experience joint pain and worse.
