Need a Netflix Binge? Here's How You Can Burn Calories Too!
By Genevieve Cunningham
In today's busy world, Netflix binges have become a guilty pleasure. Everyone loves to find a good show, binge for a few days, and leave the rest of the world behind -- even for just a little while. It's a modern day stress reliever. It's satisfying. Of course, we're all well aware that these binges aren't the healthiest form of stress relief. When we're engaged in a new show, we spend hours on end sitting and snacking. It's not exactly a way to boost health. Luckily, we can make these sessions healthier with some small changes. If you need a binge but want to boost health too, take a look at these ways to burn calories while enjoying your latest episode.
Use Equipment
If you already have or can easily get some equipment, this might be your best option. Get a treadmill, a stationary bike, or an elliptical machine, and put it in front of your TV. Put on your workout clothes, turn on your favorite series, and move while you watch. It's almost too easy! The only problem? This can be expensive if you don't already have one of these machines. Luckily, you can often find used options online if this is something you'd really like to try.
March in Place
If you need something equipment-free, consider putting on some walking shoes and marching in place. Is this a way to burn massive calories? No, of course not. But anytime you're moving over sitting, you're doing well. March for half of each episode and then rest. Or if you're more dedicated, march until you're finished watching altogether. This might not be a calorie-scorcher, but it will definitely help you burn calories that wouldn't be burned otherwise.
Calisthenics for the Win
Calisthenics are a great option for at-home workouts. All you need is your own body weight and maybe some shoes. Make a quick workout of push-ups, crunches, lunges, squats, burpees, and similar moves. Set a timer and keep up the cycle until your show is over. This will definitely help you burn calories and build muscle, and you never even have to miss an episode or leave your room.
It's entirely possible, in this instance, to have your cake and eat it too. Turn on your newest streaming obsession, pull out a yoga mat, and move your body right in front of the TV. It might not be the best or most effective method of exercise, but it's a great way to keep your health in check while still enjoying your guilty pleasures as much as you'd like.
