When Seniors Fall, The Chiropractor May Be Able to Help
I have known several seniors who took major spills and then dealt with the aftermath. One senior absolutely refused to let go of his lifestyle. He saw his chiropractor, and began working on the pain and the injuries. He also found new ways to prevent falling in the future. Soon he was out sailing on the weekends, and relaxing in his pool during the week. He also went to the gym and did strength, stretching and balance exercises.
Another lady that I knew also fell. She tripped over a rug in her home at night. She broke bones and her recovery was very slow. But with the help of her doctor and her chiropractor she also kept her lifestyle, staying in her home and working through the problems. With sheer determination, she did all of the recommended exercises and found ways to regain her normal routines.
The American Chiropractor Association researchers say there are risks that can be improved. Seniors encounter falls when they have loss of sensation in their legs, experience side effects from medications, have poor eyesight or lack proper lighting in the home at night.
ACA says at least one third of senior falls involve hazards in the home. They advise doing a complete home check for loose rugs, obstacles in furniture and inadequate night lighting. They also suggest helping seniors develop a regular exercise program with walking, swimming and balance exercises like the ones in Tai Chi classes. Exercise reduces the risk of falls as strength, balance and coordination improve. Medication and vision checks are also important.
The ACA also suggests guarding against falls that cause fractures by getting enough calcium to prevent the bone weakness of osteoporosis. They recommend milk, yogurt, cheese, fish and shellfish, broccoli, soybeans, tofu and almonds, plus maintaining sufficient amounts of Vitamin D.
A Visit to the Chiropractor’s
The chiropractor sees many cases of falls in all ages. The initial visit will include a spinal adjustment to evaluate spinal health, coupled with a review of daily activities and medical history. The goal will be to help relieve pain and maintain activity without medication or surgery. As seniors recover from falls regular visits to the chiropractor can result in an overall restructuring of their activities at home and out in the world, helping them to stay safe and active as they regain their lives.
