4 Chiropractic Tips for Pain-Free Camping

By Brandi Swieter

Camping can be a lot of fun, but it can also cause some damage to the back if people don’t exercise caution. Sleeping on a hard surface for even just one night, walking lengthy trails, and completing vigorous activities can all lead to back pain. Following some chiropractic tips for pain-free camping is the best way to ensure a safe and fun trip for all campers.

Sleep on a Softer Surface

Most people like to rough it while camping, sleeping inside a tent on nothing but a sleeping bag. Though this practice may be fine for someone younger, older adults truly need the extra padding and protection of a mattress when sleeping. An air mattress should be utilized at the very least while camping to limit the chance for back pain in the morning.

Stretch Before Any Activities

Stretching is an important step of any workout, and camping activities can be just that. Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, and other camping-related hobbies get the body moving and working more than usual. Stretching before participating will ensure the body is prepared and able to handle the task.

Wear Sturdy Shoes

The summer months can be rather warm, causing people to put on sandals and flip-flops that allow their feet to breathe. These types of footwear are not ideal while camping, at least while walking and completing activities. A solid pair of sturdy and comfortable shoes are needed to help support the back and prevent pain. A good pair of hiking boots or some new tennis shoes are best.

Pack in Smaller Amounts

Some campers like to be fully prepared while camping. They pack a variety of outfits, a first aid kit, extra bottles of water, umbrellas, sunscreen, swimsuits, towels, and so much more. Though a lot of this is necessary, carrying too much in one bag can wreak havoc on the back. The extra weight may be far too much to handle, especially if you have to carry it a long distance. It’s best to only pack the true necessities as well as pack in smaller amounts. Put items in several smaller bags rather than one large one for even weight distribution while carrying them.

Any campers who still experience back pain after using caution while camping should seek the guidance of a doctor of chiropractic at The Joint. With evening and weekend walk-in hours, campers can head in immediately following their trip to get some relief. Some joint restrictions in the body may be part of the problem. It’s even possible to experience safer camping by visiting a chiropractor before heading out on the adventure.
