Bowing to Your Partner May Help Maintain Health

By Tom Herrin

If anyone ever said that all exercise has to be hard work to produce any results, it may have been a misstatement.  The well known saying about no pain, no gain applies in many cases, but people can do a lot of good in respect to maintaining their health without going to such extremes.  Simply trying to find an activity that can help is a great start. Square dancing is one that does not require a large degree of hard work but can still help people to achieve their goal of staying active while still having fun.  It is one of those activities that can find a place in almost any family without going to the extreme.

It Can Be Good for Social Health

When people consider their need for socializing, it is a pretty big deal.  Like it or not, most people need the companionship and acceptance from others.  This can be in many forms, but when it is something that can involve a family or friends, it can do more to improve old relationships while building newer ones.  Square dancing is a highly social activity with plenty of interaction due to the nature of the movement throughout the square.

It Can Burn Calories and Improve Coordination

Square dancing involves some steady exercise.  As people move around the square, responding to the calls, they are in almost constant motion.  Some kind of regular exercise is the real key to maintaining a healthy weight, in combination with a good diet.  A session of steady square dancing usually lasts for quite a while. This should burn considerably more calories than casually spending time at home.  According to the Mayo Clinic, a half hour of square dancing may burn as many as 400 calories.

It Can Serve as a Stress Reliever

Most of us could benefit from some effective way to wind down at the end of a hectic day. Between focusing on the calls during the dance and getting some quality exercise, you may be able to find that square dancing can help you to find the relaxation that can help to reset your mind and emotions.  It can be a great way to end the week. Try a little square dancing and you may get some enjoyment while getting in better shape.
