Are Your Too Busy for Breakfast?

By Tom Herrin

Hectic schedules tend to be the basis for bad decisions.  In today’s world, people can see all kinds of advertisements for things that are supposedly good for them.  As a result, many make choices based on what they perceive as a shortage of time and what they believe is the best alternative.  In other words, when they are in a hurry, they are more willing to compromise quality. While people have heard for years about how breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they may not think about why.  The reality is that a good breakfast may be the most important meal if it is planned properly.

It May Provide Energy Needed for Performance

The body is no different from anything that does work.  Something must supply the power it uses. That energy source for the human body is food.  Starting with the right breakfast for the task ahead is a key to better and more efficient work.  Not only can people take in needed protein, but likely good fruits or juices that can be a source of healthy carbs.  Many people are lured into taking in drinks or foods that provide energy based on high sugar content and/or stimulants to take the place of better quality nutrients.

It May Help Manage or Delay Diabetes

In today’s America, diabetes has become almost epidemic.  There is little doubt that much of the problem is due to things that can be controlled by people.  Bad diet, along with a lack of exercise, can have serious effects on health. It is critical for those prone to diabetes to eat regularly and have a meal that contains what they need.  Beginning with a breakfast containing whole grains can be one of the best things they can do. It can keep the body feeling fuller and avoid that feeling of starvation that can lead to problems.

It May Help Manage Cholesterol

Another health issue today is cholesterol.  It is important for us to be aware of our numbers and manage effectively.  Consuming food containing fiber can help. Soluble fibers can lower bad cholesterol with pretty good success.  I almost always eat oats at breakfast to help with mine. Once I began to do so, I had a noticeable drop in my LDL numbers.  For me, having such a breakfast, and avoiding some of the higher fat foods around, works well. The fact is, whatever you choose for breakfast needs to be designed to support your personal health.
