Excluding Natural Light in Shorter Days Is Bad

By Tom Herrin

It is not too many times that one might say that something should specifically be avoided, but it seems that some people make a practice of leaving out something in the winter that could actually be really good for their health.  That is the sun, or more specifically, sunlight.  Many appear to make a practice of closing themselves off, when the days become short, and retreating to a more reclusive sort of lifestyle.  It may sound good, but the reality is that it may rob people of some things that could provide good support for their overall health.

The Sun May Protect You From Disease

Boosting immunities anytime can make us healthier, or keep us from getting sick.  Everyone knows the sun offers some good things.  A primary benefit is Vitamin D.  Some people underestimate its potential and its role in overall health.  This vitamin is helpful in combination with some others to make the best use of what is available.  It plays an important part in building stronger bones.  It also helps to fight inflammation.  It is believed to help combat some cancers such as those of the colon, lungs, pancreas, and a few others.  The sun can also help to activate T cells that help to fight disease as well.

The Sun Is a Source of Energy

Most people are aware that the sun is where all energy originates.  It provides some of this through plant growth as they produce food.  It also is the original source of energy that eventually becomes fossil fuels.  It has the ability to enter the eye and trigger a reaction in the brain that initiates an increase in the metabolism.  This can wake a person up and help them to start their day.  Simply opening a window and letting in light can serve as a great wake up call.

We Can Do a Lot for a Little

One good thing may be said about sunshine, that is it is free.  All we have to do is open a window.  If we don't care for that, we can easily go outdoors.  Just a brief walk outside may be enough to bring in an adequate amount of sunlight.  It doesn't even take much planning.  Once we begin a habit of enjoying the sunlight, it can be eas, and we may look forward to getting more of it.
