Excitement Can Turn Into Back Pain For Kids
By Tom Herrin
As kids start school for yet another year, most of them are pretty eager to get back even if they don’t want to admit it. As they mark off that long list of supplies, just about all of them want to add some kind of backpack to their list. After all, they need something to carry all of those supplies in. There are plenty of styles and all kinds of pop figures from which to choose. Whether it is cartoon characters for younger children or action movie stars for older kids, there is probably a backpack for each of them. This enthusiasm can turn to discomfort if they are not carefully guided in making a selection.
Smaller May Be Better
While a lot of people like those large backpacks that can hold half their room, it is far better to choose one that is smaller. It is suggested that a backpack weigh only 5-10 percent of a person’s body weight to avoid damage to their back. If the pack is too heavy, the child may tend to lean forward in order to counter the weight. This can be damaging to young backs. Helping children to make good choices can teach them to protect their backs starting from an early age.
Wearing Them Correctly Can Protect Them
Too many times children can be seen wearing their backpacks hanging off their backs or carrying them by only one strap. This kind of practice can cause them to walk unevenly, placing undue strain on the spine. Children should be encouraged to wear their packs up over both shoulders. This will help the weight be balanced and allow them to carry without excess strain. If they are able to learn this lesson at a young age, they may form habits that will last throughout their lives. This may be a great assistance in avoiding problems as they age.
Help Them To Practice Good Habits Now
As we teach our children, we all know the importance of being good examples. We can’t tell them one thing and then carry some monstrous bag or purse over one shoulder when we go out. What we demonstrate for our children may remain with them for the remainder of their lives. Let us set the standard now so that they can enjoy better health throughout their lifetimes.
