Pick Those Pears Out Back, They Are Good and Healthy
By Tom Herrin
For many people, trees may seem like something for shade or to provide a certain look of balance in the yard. Pecan trees are certainly a popular tree in Texas, though some find them annoying when the pecans begin to fall. Another pretty common tree here that produces fruit is a pear tree. Most people realize that there are good and bad pears. Some kinds are really not edible, but for those that are, bingo. Pears are a pretty simple fruit that often gets overlooked. A lot of people don't want to take the trouble to pick what is out there. A good pear is hard to beat. They really can do some good things for health.
They May Help Fight Diseases
Like so many other fruits, pears are high in antioxidants. They are rich in Vitamins A and C. They also contain measurable amounts of flavonoid compounds beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. All of these can play a part in eliminating free radicals that can open the door to cancer-causing problems. One of the most effective ways to fight some cancers seems to be to head them off in this way.
They May Help Prevent Birth Defects
For women expecting babies, birth defects are a huge concern. These are life-changing things for parents as well as difficulties for children. There are so many issues that can result in them that women must be increasingly vigilant in order to protect their unborn child. One of the major components of most prenatal vitamins is folic acid. Pears contain a fair portion of this. If having a pear a day can help provide a little greater peace of mind for expectant mothers, isn't it worth it?
They Are a Quick and Easy Snack
It may seem odd to say, but pears are one of the fastest foods we can consume. They are so soft that they really melt in your mouth. Unlike so many others, there is no need to peel them or even chew them very much. You can grab a pear and eat it before you walk across the kitchen. They are also good sliced in a bowl, cooked in a dessert, or preserved. So if you have some hanging round in the backyard, pick them. If not, pick some up at the grocery store.
