Dr. Sugeily Davila became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2016 when she began serving residents in the Houston area, where she continues doing the work she finds so rewarding. She began working at the Bunker Hill clinic in 2019 and serves as its clinic director.
“I love how we can directly affect patient health by just using our knowledge and the touch of our hands, and see their health improve exponentially in a matter of a few adjustments,” she says. “Success story after success story, I see what we do has a significant impact on patients, especially those who have tried everything and decided to ‘give us a shot,” but then become lifetime patients because the want to be better and feel better.”
Dr. Davila finds that educating her patients is gratifying and delights in teaching them that pain is not normal: “Getting adjustments is part of holistic improvement of health, so I love being part of a patient’s journey to a healthier lifestyle.”
Raised in Puerto Rico, she enjoys spending time with “Kevin, my partner in crime” who played a crucial role in maintaining a work/life balance while she was attending Texas Chiropractic College earning her doctorate. Dr. Davila’s secondary education began at the University of Puerto Rico in her hometown of Humacao, P.R., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology.
“Culturally, chiropractic care in my island was more of a luxury and not as widely common as it is here in the United States,” she says. “I had a knee injury that was being considered for surgery but my mom decided to seek alternative care. This introduced me to chiropractic and I fell in love with it from Day 1. I learned that pain is not a normal process. At the time, there were no chiropractic schools in Puerto Rico, so I made the decision to move to Pasadena to study at Texas Chiropractic College to become an expert at adjustments and a well-rounded doctor.”
As a well-rounded doctor she adores her English bulldog Stella and a couple of cats, mischievous Xena and antisocial Luna “which are mostly Kevin’s.”.
Dr. Davila is curious and isn’t shy about trying things. Her hobbies include writing music and singing, playing guitar, and “watching corny TV shows in different languages with subtitles so that I’m forced to watch.” She also travels frequently because her family is so spread out.
One of the things she is most proud of professionally is how she has been able to refer patients to the correct doctor, leading them to get early cancer diagnoses and other worrisome conditions. “I care about my patients a lot,” she says, “and will do anything that is in my power to help them, so I don’t stop until I get them well and moving in the right direction.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Davila says the one food she always keeps stocked is cheese: “It’s the best food there is.”
If she could bring together any four people from history for her ideal dinner party, she would go for laughs with Jim Carrey, Jeff Dunham, Wanda Sykes, and the late Robin Williams.
Among the most memorable things she has done, Dr. Davila recorded a CD, won a music competition playing “Cuatro,” and played with the Puerto Rico Symphonic Orchestra.
Dr. Ben Sachs joined The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2020 when he began serving residents in the Houston area.
“The best thing about being a chiropractor is being able to help people without the use of medications or surgery,” he says. “Getting to see people heal and improve their health is amazing. The best part is when people regain hope after they previously believed they were never going to get better.
“I love developing a personal connection with my patients.”
Dr. Sachs was raised in Indiana but moved around quite a bit until his family landed in Washington state, which is where he was first exposed to chiropractic and discovered its benefits.
He enjoys all kinds of games in his spare time. Board games. Card games. Video games. “They are always better spending time with friends, eating food, and having fun,” he says.
Dr. Sachs earned his doctorate of chiropractic from University of Western States in Portland, Ore. “I always feel better knowing I am helping people achieve their optimal health,” he says. “It’s always fun to see people react to being adjusted. Reactions range from shock to extreme relief or even laughter.”
In Case You Didn’t Know
Dr. Sachs is committed to having Tillamook cheddar cheese in his refrigerator at all times; it takes him back to his childhood: “It reminds me of Washington and going to their cheese factory in Oregon.”
If you’re looking for a good read, Dr. Sachs thinks very highly of the Bazil Broketail fantasy novel series by Christopher Rowley. “It has a lot of interesting themes in it,” he says franchise that stars a leatherback dragon named Bazil. “You never know where you are going to end up -- no matter how prepared you are."
