Dr. Renee Johns, or Dr. Renee as she prefers, began working at The Joint Chiropractic in 2017, primarily in Cy-Fair but also providing local chiropractic care in Cinco Ranch, Katy and Copperfield. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2011, and received her doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College in 2017.
“What I enjoy most about this field is being able to help people get out of this very real pain that they’re feeling,” Dr. Renee says. “I love showing people, and proving to people, that there is a holistic way to decrease pain without relying on medication.”
When Dr. Renee isn’t sharing the wonders of chiropractic with her patients, she enjoys time with her husband Robert and playing with their dog Lily. She also enjoys working out and traveling.
Dr. Renee became a confirmed believer of chiropractic care in 2007 when she was a patient. “I had neck pain after an automobile accident and, with one adjustment, the neck pain went away,” she says. “The adjustment helped me so much because I was only 19 at the time and I couldn’t do anything without pain. That’s not a life any person wants to lead, much less a 19-year-old.”
Now, she tries to pass along those kinds of experiences to her patients at Cy-Fair where, she says, the staff and the patients are “awesome!”
“The wellness coordinators at Cy-Fair are so kind and willing to do anything they can to help, Dr. Renee says. “The patients there are always smiling -- even when they are in pain -- and they just make my job even more enjoyable!”
In Case You Didn’t Know:
It may not be for everyone, but Dr. Renee’s go-to food in her diet is kale and spinach. “Everyone,” she says, “needs more greens.”
And if she had to share a night of big salads with anyone throughout time, she would choose to dine with syndicated radio host, author and motivational speaker Dave Ramsey, as well as another motivational speaker who had a pretty wide reach: Jesus.
“I’d like to have Jesus at my dinner table to help make me a better person,” Dr. Renee says. “Dave Ramsey is a financial guru who I’d want to learn from to make smart financial decisions throughout life.”
Among the coolest things she has ever done were those things that challenged her physically and mentally: snowboarding in the mountains, and graduating from chiropractic college. “Both tasks tested me in different ways,” Dr. Renee says, “but I persevered and the end result was amazing!”
Dr. Sophia Bekiaris -- you can call her Dr. Sophia -- joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2018 and works at a number of different clinics in the greater Houston area, including Cypress. A 2005 graduate of University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, she graduated magna cum laude. She went on to earn her doctorate in chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
“Chiropractic is such a great field and the thing I like most about it is improving the quality of life of my patients naturally,” Dr. Sophia says. “I love seeing a patient’s face light up when they feel better instantly.”
A product of the Houston area, she has a pit bull named Atlas and a husband who, she says, “moved halfway across the globe for me.”
She likes being active in her spare time and enjoys yoga, gardening, and making cheese.
She knew chiropractic was her calling when she experienced its effects first-hand. “I was suffering from really bad migraine headaches,” Dr. Sophia says. “Chiropractic was the only treatment that was able to help. It provided pain relief and allowed me to function properly, like a regular person.”
In Case You Didn’t Know …
Dr. Sophia says the one thing she must always have in her kitchen is avocados.
Among those historical figures that she would like to meet for her dream dinner, she would like to pair Elon Musk (“a modern-day genius”) with Beethoven (“he was a deaf musician!”), She would also include Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi on her guest list. “They advocated peace and respect toward fellow humans,” Dr. Sophia says. “We need more of that.”
Dr. Sophia once had the opportunity to practice in Athens, Greece, providing her one of the coolest experiences ever. “It was interesting because there is no regulating agency, so anyone can claim they are a chiropractor,” she says. “However, when people find a legitimate doctor of chiropractic, their entire outlook changes.”
Dr. Mary Tran joined The Joint Chiropractic in Katy while serving as an adjunct professor at Lone Star College, a gig she continues even today even though she isn’t that far removed from college herself. She graduated from the University of Houston in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology-exercise science. Later, she then went on to earn bachelor degrees in anatomy, and health and wellness, as well as her doctorate of chiropractic, in 2014 at Parker University in Dallas.
She joined the Katy location in January 2017, but also works at The Joint’s Copperfield, Cypress, Cinco Ranch, Kingwood and Cy-Fair locations.
With such a strong educational foundation steeped in anatomy and how the body works, it’s no wonder that Dr. Tran is driven by “helping people get out of pain and restoring motion back into their bodies after having to live with dysfunction for so long,”
“Increasing the quality of one’s life is the most rewarding part of being the chiropractic field,” she says, adding that she’s fond of the saying, “Your health is your wealth.”
“With my cultural background, we took a more natural and holistic approach to healthcare,” Dr. Tran explains. “Taking preventative measures and maintaining your health through good habits is the type of environment I grew up in. The philosophy of chiropractic was congruent with my upbringing, and that’s when I knew it was my calling. My father had carpal tunnel syndrome and was advised for surgery. After watching his fellow peers have unsuccessful results, he sought chiropractic care. Through several treatments, his symptoms disappeared and he avoided surgery.”
Because of that moment, and that background and commitment to others, Dr. Tran says “bringing/increasing the quality of life through affordable chiropractic care” is what she likes best about being at The Joint’s Katy location.
When she’s not helping others, Dr. Tran enjoys attending festivals, cooking, trying new restaurants, and going to the movies and comedy shows. She also practices Krav Maga, a military style of self-defense -- though she prefers the healing arts.
In Case You Didn’t Know:
Dr. Tran is a big fan of great food, but she loves keeping a good juice on hand at all times, whether it’s orange, grapefruit or Kombucha. “Why? I’m not sure,” she says, “but it makes me happy.”
What would also make her happy is the opportunity to dine with some of her favorite personalities. If she could choose a foursome to join her at one of the great restaurants she seeks out in Houston, she would choose Food Network chef Ina Garten (“I adore her and her recipes”), financial guru Suze Orman (“I’d pick her mind on business management, what made her successful, and get some financial advice”), the Dalai Lama (“to spiritually guide me through the art of happiness”) and Ellen DeGeneres (“she’s incredibly funny, optimistic, and I admire her philanthropic work”).
Maybe someday Dr. Tran could visit the Dalai Lama on his turf. She loves to travel. “Adventure is the best gift you can give yourself,” she says. “Making memories and experiences are far more valuable than money will ever be.”
