Dr. Patrick Livingood, known as Dr. Patrick to his patients, joined The Joint Chiropractic in 2018 and is a valuable member of its family as a floater between several clinics in the Houston area.
“I seek to empower my patients to improve and maintain their quality of life by reducing pain and improving functionality, as well as educating them about the benefits of exercise, nutrition, and other therapies,” Dr. Patrick says. “The thing I love most about being in this field is the joy of improving the quality of life of patients. The other thing I love is the wonderful people you get to work with.”
Dr. Patrick grew in Moorhead, Minn., and worked previously in Wheaton, Ill., before settling in Texas. He has an extensive education background. He received his doctorate of chiropractic from National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill., as well as a bachelor of science degree in human biology. He also received an English Bible Certificate from Wheaton College, studied German literature at University of Vienna in Austria, and earned a bachelor of arts in social services with a minor in American Indian studies from Moorhead State.
He and wife Denise have three children, three grandchildren and three cats. When he’s not spending time with them, he enjoys coin collecting in his down time.
He got involved in chiropractic following a missionary trip. “After returning from a year in Europe with Youth With A Mission, I was guest of the director of the clinics of National College of Health Sciences and he encouraged me to become a chiropractor,” he says.
It led him to a satisfying career, and now, one in which Dr. Patrick gets to work with a broader spectrum of people than most doctors within The Joint Chiropractic.
“I have the privilege of working at all the clinics, and the best part is working with all the different staff, doctors and patients,” he says.
In Case You Didn’t Know
Water may be the most important thing our body can consume, but Dr. Patrick says the one thing he keeps in his kitchen is ice cream. “I love ice cream,” he says.
If he could host an ice cream social with any characters from history, Dr. Patrick would choose to invite George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, and the Apostle Paul. “I would love to hear their personal stories,” he says.
The advantage of traveling allowed Dr. Patrick to be in Europe before an iconic moment in world history, and it made an indelible impression. “When I was in Berlin, the Berlin Wall was still up,” he says.”I was able to talk with guards on the other side of the wall; I came to recognize that they were no different than anyone else and that the wall should come down. I was delighted when it finally did.”
Dr. Gary Chen is a recent graduate of Texas Chiropractic College class of 2019 back in August. It was a smooth transition as he studied Kinesiology and Exercise Science at the University of Houston. Dr. Chen was born in Boston but has lived in Houston since the year 2000 and considers Houston home.
He was first inspired to pursue his career in Chiropractic after learning more about the profession while receiving treatment after a car accident. He realized that he could help so many people that don’t know much about the profession. After a tragic near- drowning experience in his early twenties, Dr. Chen realized he needed to push himself to achieve his dreams. It was after this that he applied to Texas Chiropractic College.
Dr. Chen is an avid tennis player and competed back in high school and planned to in college but unfortunately tore his rotator cuff. He states that if he had known about Chiropractic that he would have been able get help for his shoulder to heal much quicker. He was also a state finalist back in 2014 where his team was 2 points from winning the tournament and getting a bid to the national tournament.
Dr. Chen says “The best thing about my job is the smile and satisfaction I see in patients’ faces when they get and feel so much better. I can really sense the gratitude from them and it really makes my day.”
