Different Types of Chiropractic Adjustments

When visiting a chiropractor, the main goal is to correct any misalignments in the spine by manipulating it and putting misplaced vertebrae back where they belong. Patients will be given a series of treatments based on their diagnosis, which can include spinal manipulation in additional to other supportive treatments. But there are many ways to adjust the spine, and as chiropractic care has continued to develop, so have the methods of manipulation.

So what are the main ways to adjust a patient, and why do chiropractors use one or the other?

One of the most common methods of spinal adjustment is the toggle drop method. In this practice, the chiropractor crosses their hands and presses down firmly on a part of the spine. He or she will then adjust the area via a quick and precise thrust with their hands. Chiropractors have long used this method and often use it help increase a patient’s mobility within their vertebral joints.

Another popular method for adjustments is used on a special drop table. The table has different sections that be moved up or down based on your body position. Patients lie on their front, back or side and the chiropractor applies quick thrusts throughout the spinal area as the table section drops at the same time. Many people prefer the table adjustments, as they are somewhat lighter and do not include twisting motions used in other methods.

Many chiropractors also use specialized tools to assist in their adjustments, such as a tool called an activator. The chiropractor uses the spring-loaded tools to perform the adjustments instead of their hands. Many considering activator adjustments to be the most gentle of all adjustment methods. Some veterinarians use activator tools to perform chiropractic adjustments on animals. This practice is becoming widely utilized across the country in animal health science.

Whichever adjustment method your chiropractor uses, they all offer great benefits both to your spine and your overall heath and wellness. If there is a certain method that you prefer, talk to your chiropractor about it. If they do not perform a certain modality, they may be able to recommend a colleague that does.
