Health Benefits of Having Siblings

April 10 is National Sibling Day. Think about your childhood growing up with your siblings. Sure, it might have been a pain sharing your room with your brother or frustrating when your sister always borrowed your clothes or make up without asking. Believe it or not, your parents were doing you a favor by procreating and giving you a sibling. Siblings come with some health benefits, even benefits that you will experience long after you both leave home.

Promotes Generosity

When you have a sibling, you are often forced into mini-parenting roles, especially if you are an older sibling. This causes you to model the loving and caring behaviors that your parents exhibited. On research found that siblings who felt more loved and safe were more likely to help others. Also, being a sibling means there are many opportunities to learn sharing and cooperating, which only helps you once you enter the real world.

Inspire Passion

Many people will say that their sibling is their source of motivation or inspiration for accomplishing something. The eldest sibling tends to be more driven and focused. All younger siblings usually look up to their older sibling for inspiration and either try to imitate their sibling or they try to be better.

Conflict Resolution

Fights and quarrels are a natural way of life. Those who have siblings got to learn how to resolve conflicts from an early age. Even though you may have been fighting over a toy, sibling fights help teach listening skills and how to communicate effectively.

Build Loyalty and Long-Term Friendships

There may have been some distinct moments in your life where you would have traded your sibling for anything, but there are also times when your sibling has your back. You share a connection through DNA, and this can be the reason why you are so loyal to each other. When you reach your eighties, those that do so with a sibling have been found to do so with less loneliness and more life satisfaction.

Affects Your Weight

Research tells us that if one sibling becomes obese, the other sibling’s likelihood of obesity increases to 40 percent.

Honor your brother or sister by treating them to a wellness adjustment at The Joint. What better way to tell your sibling you care about them then by watching their back – literally! Our affordable adjustments make for a wonderful gift that will benefit their overall health.
