The Poor Health Habits That Are Causing Hair Loss

Our hair is a good indicator to whether we are healthy or not. If you are noticing that you are losing much more hair than the typical 50 to 100 strands per day, then something may be up with your health. Here are some reasons why your hair is thinning and what you can do about it.

You Are On a Crash Diet

Every part of our bodies needs nutrients to thrive. When your diet is lacking in a certain nutrient, then it can show up in hair loss or in lackluster looking hair. Your hair needs healthy vitamins, protein, and fat to look its best, so avoid crash diets or diets that are too extreme. A healthy and balanced diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, allows your body the nutrients it needs.

The Sun is Damaging Your Hair

Too much time in the sun can damage your hair follicles. It is a good idea to wear solid, wide-brimmed hats every time you plan to be outside for long periods of time. Also, using special sunscreen formulated for your hair can protect your strands from harsh UVA and UVB rays.

Stress is to Blame

Too much stress or the case of a traumatic event can increase your hair’s shedding phase. However, this does not happen right away. It usually takes your hair three months before it starts showing the effects of too much stress.

Poor Hormone Levels

If your hormone levels are too high or too low, then you can experience hair loss. Many times extreme cases of unbalanced hormones need to be treated by a doctor. For more minor cases, you can balance your hormones by eating more healthy fats, eating a more balanced diet, and eliminating processed food, stress, and sugar from your life.

You’ve Lost a Lot of Weight

Losing more than 15 pounds can be a shock to your system and trigger hair loss. The hair loss may not happen for three to six months after the weight has come off. As long as you didn’t lose the weight through extreme measures, your hair loss should slow down and go back to normal.

There is Too Much Vitamin A in Your Diet

While your hair needs a lot of vitamins to be healthy, too much of vitamin A can actually cause it to fall out or thin. Other signs off too much vitamin A include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and an orange-tinted skin. Thankfully, it is easy to reverse the problems just by stopping the vitamin A supplements.

Don’t write off hair loss or thinning hair as something minor. It could be pointing to a bigger sign that something is wrong with your health.
