Caffeine Interrupts Sleep
Caffeine has been found to take many hours to leave your body. Therefore, drinking coffee too late in the day can mean that it is still in your system when your head hits the pillow. This is not beneficial for your health because the caffeine then reduces REM sleep and deprives your body of the deep sleep it needs for essential recharging and cognitive skills. You can avoid this issue if you keep your caffeine intake to early in the morning, instead of using caffeine to give you a second wind while you drive home from work.
That energy slump you feel in the afternoon is actually a result from your body coming off of a caffeinated high. In fact, when caffeine leaves the body, cognitive performance decreases and moods worsen. The only remedy is to drink more caffeine.
