Ditch These 5 Friends to Get Healthy

Take a look at your closest friends. Some of them may be affecting your health and well-being for the worse. Whether we realize it or not, negative friendships can cause stress and become toxic to our mental and physical health. A recent study done by the University of College London even found that close relationships that caused stress or worrying, lead to individuals having faster cognitive decline as they aged.

Here are the top five friendships that you need to watch out for if you want to stay healthy.

Negative Friends

All of us have our negative days, or moments when we are in a bad mood and need to vent. However, if you have a friend that is constantly negative or pessimistic, they will likely bring you down too. Negative feelings are contagious, so be careful how much negativity you allow in from friends.

Picky Friends

Whether it’s a picky friend or neighbor, if they constantly complain about something you are doing, the demands could be bringing down your health. says, “A 2014 Danish study found that frequent arguments and conflicts within a person’s social circle, including neighbors, were associated with an increased risk of death in middle age.”

Backstabbing Friends

Friends are supposed to be there for you in hard times. Keeping a friend that constantly betrays you and your trust will only affect your mental health.

Chronic Cancelers

If you have friend that is constantly canceling on you or running late, it could lead to negative feelings. Of course, be sure to be considerate if the excuses are reasonable or if your friendship is worth the constant canceling. However, if the neglect of this friend brings up more negative feelings than positive ones, it may be time to let the friendship die.

Friends Who Are Bad Examples

Friends that live unhealthy lives and encourage you to do the same are not ones to keep. For example, if your friend always wants you to smoke or binge drink with them, it is time to find a new friend. Also, if your friend ridicules your healthy eating and exercise plan, this could be a warning sign.

One research shows that friends share similar feelings, such as loneliness, obesity, and poor eating habits. This is why it is so important to surround yourself with healthy and positive friends. You may not need to ditch bad friends forever, but you do need to be careful of how much time you spend around them.
