Meet The Doctors

Dr. Mark Laurents, D.C. is a Clinic Director at League City

Dr. Mark Laurents joined the family of healthcare providers at The Joint Chiropractic in 2019 with his arrival at the League City clinic location. He earned his doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College.

“The thing I like best about being in the chiropractic field is giving patients an opportunity to achieve health without the influence of medication or surgery to achieve wellness,” he says. “It’s extremely gratifying developing the trust and respect of patients, as well as developing the respect of allopathic providers.”

A product of Port Arthur and North Shore, Dr. Laurents worked previously in El Paso, Port Neches, La Porte, and Beaumont.

He and wife Sheri have three sons and a daughter, along with a dog named Mitzi. When he’s not working or spending time with family, he enjoys golfing, hunting and fishing, cooking, and yard work.

Dr. Laurents knew chiropractic was his calling when his first-hand experience provided relief from chronic pain.

“Following high school graduation, I developed a football injury that continued to recur,” he says. “My family did not believe in chiropractic treatment. Adult age was 18 at that point, so I sought chiropractic, and with resolution became convinced that alternative healthcare was beneficial.”

He is happy to bring his decades of experience to his local patients. “I thoroughly enjoy the ability to assist patients in achieving their health goals,” he says. “With more than 20 years of multidisciplinary training, I feel very confident in my ability to diagnose musculoskeletal disorders and give patients the best opportunities to make their own decisions regarding management.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

Dr. Laurents says the one thing he always keeps in his refrigerator is keto blueberry bread: “It fulfills my cravings for something sweet while I am attempting to become healthier in my latter 50s.”

If he could bring together any four people from history to comprise his dream dinner party, Dr. Laurents would like to sit down with President Donald Trump, legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry, megachurch pastor Joel Osteen, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.

One of the most gratifying experiences of Dr. Laurents’ life was “becoming a medical director with U.S. Pain and Spine as it symbolized the passion and hard work put forth to achieve my goals to integrate within a system that has not been friendly toward our profession,” he says. “The reason it was so cool is because these providers had great respect for my ability to accurately diagnose, treat, and offer assistance to patients that was not available in the current model.”

Dr. Gemma McDonald, D.C. is a Chiropractor at League City

Dr. Gemma McDonald became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2022 when she began serving residents in Kemah, where she continues doing the work she finds so rewarding.

“I love being able to help patients feel better and to improve their quality of life,” she says. “It’s gratifying to be able to change people’s lives.” Born in England but raised in Houston, she has worked previously in Houston and Cypress.

Dr. Mac, as she is known to patients, has a yellow Lab named Gryffin, and a bloodhound named Sherlock. In her spare time, she enjoys watching and coaching soccer.

She earned her doctorate in chiropractic from Texas Chiropractic College after getting a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s in exercise and human performance at Houston Baptist.

“I played soccer in college and we would have a chiropractor come into the training room every week,” she says, describing the time she became a believer in chiropractic. “I remember experiencing tightness in my upper back and it was unbearable. I went to see the chiropractor and after the first adjustment, I felt like a million bucks.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

If she could bring together any four people from history for her ideal dinner party, Dr. Mac would send invitations to singer Kelly Clarkson (“I’m her biggest fan, I’ve seen her 10 times in concert”), David Beckham (“my favorite soccer player of all-time”), basketball player Kobe Bryant (“I respect him greatly as an athlete and he is the ultimate girl dad”), and comedian Ellen DeGeneres (“in a previous life I wanted to be a talk show host! I was voted most humorous in high school.”).

Dr. Mac loves Harry Potter. “It was the series that made me fall in love with reading,” she says.

The one staple she keeps stocked in her refrigerator is ketchup: “It goes with almost anything and makes my cooking disasters taste better.”

Dr. Bethany Pellow Bliss, D.C. is a Chiropractor at League City

Bethany Pellow Bliss, DC, DACNB, joined The Joint Chiropractic family of local healthcare providers in 2020 and moved to the clinic in League City in 2023.

“My favorite thing about being a chiropractor is watching people heal right before my eyes -- no medication or surgery required,” she says. “I love that every day is different and every body is different. I am constantly learning and growing in this profession, to better serve my patients.”

In addition to offering chiropractic care at The Joint in Clear Lake, Dr. Bliss previously worked in Missouri City, Naples, Fla., and Orlando.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Dr. Bliss met her husband, James, in the first grade. “He gave me his Reese's Pieces pencil and I was hooked!” Dr. Bliss has a son, TJ, and a “bonus daughter,” Sam.

The family has two dogs - an Australian shepherd named Ziva, and a golden retriever named Pepper. “Pepper loves to chew, and Ziva loves to tell on her.”

Dr. Bliss was a dancer for more than 30 years. “I traveled the world dancing, teaching, and adjudicating,” she says. “In my spare time I like to do yoga, crossfit training, and take walks with my family.”

She earned a bachelor of arts in liberal studies at California University of Pennsylvania, known as PennWest and completed training at Pittsburgh School of Massage Therapy. Dr. Bliss studied clinical neuroscience with the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies and earned diplomate status through the American Chiropractic Neurology Board.

She earned a Doctorate at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Fla., and she has specialized in the study of migraine headaches and BPPV, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

“My mom is the reason I do what I do,” Dr. Bliss says. “Growing up, I watched her struggle with severe vertigo. It was so severe that she was not able to walk or drive for long periods of time. For 15 years I went to doctor after doctor with her, trying to get to the root cause of her problem. Time after time she got the same answer: ‘Oh, honey, your blood pressure is high. Here’s some blood pressure medication.’ One of the side effects of that medication is dizziness! The other typical response was, ‘Oh, honey, you’re just depressed; here are some anti-depressants.’ Of course she’s depressed! She’s constantly dizzy and can’t take care of herself or her family!

“Nobody was able to find and correct the cause of her problem. It wasn’t until I started going to see a chiropractor for my chronic sinus infections that I realized chiropractic might help with her vertigo. It took me two years to get her into the office to have her spine checked, but after one adjustment her dizziness went away! Her vertigo stemmed from a problem in her neck that was interfering with her balance. After seeing chiropractic change my mom’s life, I knew I had to be a part of this, not only to help my mom in the future, but because I know other people are sick and suffering and looking for answers. So, I sold my dance studio, packed everything I owned into my car, and went to chiropractic school!”

Dr. Bliss has had countless memorable experiences as a chiropractor. “Helping people prevent carpal tunnel surgery, eliminating the need for anti-anxiety medications, reducing symptoms of chronic migraine -- the list just goes on and on.”

One meaningful experience for Dr. Bliss was treating a baby boy. “Through gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments, he went from having over 30 seizures a day to 10 or less!”

The best thing about her job at The Joint League City is working with her associates at the clinic. “They are some of the best chiropractors in Texas, and we all work together to get our patients well,” she says. “We also have fun while we do it!”

In Case You Didn’t Know

If she could put together a dinner party including famous guests, Dr. Bliss would invite businesswoman and philanthropist Sara Blakely, authors Jane Austen and C.S. Lewis, and composer Amadeus Mozart.

One of the coolest things she has ever done was backpack through Southeast Asia. “I remember being in Cambodia, standing on top of one of the buildings in Angkor Wat, and feeling a tremendous sense of awe for my surroundings,” she says. “I had a sense of accomplishment for myself in getting there, overcoming the fear of traveling so far away, and navigating a country where I don't speak the language. It showed me respect for different ways of life, and confidence in my ability to plan and execute things that scare me.”

When it comes to meaningful reading material, Dr. Bliss says, “The Chronicles of Narnia was the series that sparked my imagination as a child.”

Dr. David Higginbotham, D.C. is a Chiropractor at League City

Dr. David Higginbotham became part of The Joint Chiropractic’s team of local healthcare providers in 2022 when he began serving residents in the Webster area, where he continues doing the work he finds so rewarding.

“The thing I like most about being in the chiropractic field is helping patients without drugs or surgery,” he says. “I love building relationships with patients and their families.”

Dr. H, as his patients call him, is a native son who worked previously in Houston. He enjoys spending time with his wife, as well as golfing, hunting, and fishing.

He earned his doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena.

Dr. H says it was natural for him to pursue a career helping others experience the holistic health benefits of chiropractic because “I’ve been seeing a chiropractor my entire life.”

Actually, it started when he was 6 years old. He and his brother climbed on the roof of their house when Dr. H decided to jump. He hurt his lower back. The family physician said to lay the boy out on a heating pad and “he’ll be fine.” Knowing her 6-year-old wasn’t going to be still on a heating pad for any length of time, Mrs. H took her son to the family chiropractor. “I entered the office dragging my right leg, unable to walk without assistance from my mother,” he recalls. “After a brief exam and chiropractic adjustment to my lower back and sacroiliac joints, I proceeded to get off the table and walk without dragging my leg. I thought that was wonderful because now I could play when I got home.”

As a professional, he has paid it forward many times. “After three decades of practice, one of my more memorable experiences was similar to the one when I was 6,” he said. “A patient had a similar condition to mine, presented the same symptoms, and after his first visit was able to return to work the next day with little to no symptoms. Chiropractic is not a quick fix, it’s a lifestyle that patients need to maintain their spinal health because you only have one spine.”
