Reduce Stress by Organizing Your Life

By Rachel Shouse

Stress often feels unavoidable at times. There's something going wrong everywhere you turn. Although not all stress is avoidable, there are ways to lessen it. Making some adjustments can make a big difference. Prioritizing, planning, and organizing are all helpful tools that will help reduce stress caused by small inconveniences throughout the day.

Prioritize Your Life and Day

Most people have plenty to do throughout the day so stress is no help. Once you notice the constant stress, you may feel it's time to change some things, which is a good decision. Stress can cause both physical and mental health problems. It should go without saying, but you don't need more worries on your plate.

The first step to reduce stress is prioritizing. This is important because it tells you where to focus so you actually work on what matters. It's easy to get distracted throughout the day. If you notice that you're struggling to focus, set a timer on your phone. You can either use it to challenge yourself to work quickly, or as a reminder in case you've wondered.

Plan Ahead

Although life throws you curveballs, there are ways to try to kick some to the curve. Think about the times of the day that you feel the most stressed. Think about why you're stressed. Is it because of work? Do you have a lot of chores at home? Either way, a bit of planning and you'll probably find more time in your day.

The best way to plan out a productive day is to do a weekly brain dump. This means you'll write down your whole week on a piece of paper. Try to remember as much as possible. If you have appointments, get everything ready the night before. If your kids have to go to daycare, pack the diaper bag ahead of time. Doing little things like this can drastically help your day.

Organize These Parts of Your Life

You'd be surprised if you knew how much your environment has an affect on you. The messier your environment is, the messier you will be. Do little things to help your future self out. Clear off the counter before bed, get your coffee ready, etc. You're only helping yourself by getting things ready and organized.

Other areas that are a great place to organize are your car, closets, under cabinets, etc. Think about how much time you could save if you knew where everything was. It's OK to have a junk drawer, but don't let all your drawers become that way.

No one's home or social life is ever going to be perfect. There's stress that you simply can't avoid. Some of it could be solved if some extra time and effort were put in for a short time. Eventually these types of ideas become a habit and you don't even need to think about it anymore. It's already done.
