Long Nights May Give Way to Light for Health

By Tom Herrin

Even though we may feel that we need to shut ourselves in away from the light when the nights are longer, that doesn't mean that we can afford to do without sunlight.  As part of a natural process, sunlight is a critical part of keeping us healthy and keeping our bodies working as they should.  Anytime someone chooses to isolate themselves from the sun, they risk paying a price.  It is every bit as important for us to get sunlight when we have less of it as at any other time.

The Sun May Support Immunity

Building up our resistance to disease is something that most of us strive to do.  If we are concerned at all about health, we will seek out any ways possible to do this.  The sun is the primary source of Vitamin D.  It is known to help build stronger bones and fight inflammation.  This vitamin also appears to have some effect on resistance to some cancers.  Among these are cancers of the pancreas, lungs, and colon.  The sun additionally seems to stimulate T cells which are recognized for their ability to identify and combat many kinds of disease.

The Sun May Help Us Live Longer

For years, most people lived their lives based on the sun.  They got up when it rose and went to bed shortly after it set.  This pattern seemed to be successful and helped many sleep better.  According to one study done on women, those who received the least amount over a 20-year period had higher mortality rates than others.  This is pretty significant.  We obviously still need to use sunscreens, but sunlight itself must play a big role in our health.

There Is No Cost

There is nothing like a benefit with no cost.  The sun is free to anyone who wants it.  There is no reason for us to deny ourselves the opportunity to get sunlight.  Simply opening the windows may be all it takes.  If that isn't a fit, we can go for a walk outdoors.  It will only take a few minutes each day to achieve our goal.  For me, it is ideal.  Sunlight always makes me feel much better about everything.  I do everything I can to let light into wherever I am.  The bigger the windows, the better.
