Basic Tips for Optimal Mental Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

We all know that we are supposed to be taking care of our mental health, but very few of us really know what that looks like. What should we do? What steps should be taken? Having a plan can make all the difference in the world. If you would like to get a plan together to keep your mental health in great shape, take a look at these basic tips to get you started.

Daily Tips

These are tips that can be done on a daily basis. They aren’t time consuming or expensive, and so making it a habit is the only real challenge.

  • Enjoy personal time - Everyone needs time for themselves. If possible, get just a few minutes to yourself every single day. Take time for a hobby, go for a walk, or even sit in your car for five minutes before joining work. This small amount of time will help you clear your mind and relax to help prevent tension from building over a long period of time.

  • Partake in physical activity - All aspects of your health are linked. If you want to feel well mentally, you also need to feel well physically. Every day, make some time for just a little bit of exercise. Keeping yourself active decreases your chance for depression and increases your chance for a positive self esteem.

Weekly Tips

Some things don’t need to be done on a daily basis or take too much time. Instead, these tips might be added to a weekly routine in order to improve mental health.

  • Meet up with friends - We all need social interaction. Once a week, meet with friends in person. Not online, but really in the flesh. Talk, laugh, and unwind together, and you’ll see a big improvement in your mental state over time.

  • Check in with yourself - Once a week, ask yourself the tough questions. How am I feeling? Am I making progress in life? Am I setting appropriate goals and reaching them? Are my actions taking me toward these goals? These sorts of questions can keep you on track instead of letting yourself wander until it’s tough to find your way again.

Monthly Tips

Still, some tips need even less frequent visits. Not everything is meant to be done all the time, as it won’t have the same impact. Here are some tips that may help when performed on a monthly basis.

  • Take a vacation - I know that not everyone can afford a full blown vacation every month, but most can take a day. If you can’t take off  work, get away on your weekend. Just get out of town or do something fun to take your mind off of your worries and remind yourself that life is fun!

  • Check in with a professional - Not everyone needs a professional, but don’t be afraid of one. If you need help, check in and get the help you need. This is one of the best ways to keep your mental health in absolute tip-top shape.

Your mental health matters. Don’t ever forget that. Take the necessary steps to keep it in great shape. You’ll be glad you did. After all, your happiness and the rest of your life depend on it.
