3 Ways to Improve Your Quality of Sleep

We all know how important sleep is to our health. It provides our body with the time that it needs to rest and recuperate, and gives us the energy to get through the next day. Without sleep, we can become lethargic, forgetful, and more apt to overeat over the next 12 hours or so. Therefore, it's important that we have the tools and resources that can provide us with the best sleep possible. Here are a few good ways to ensure that you are getting the rest that you need and deserve each night:

Set a schedule for yourself.

If you are consistent with your sleep schedule, then your body will get used to a specific sleep-wake cycle and you will sleep better at night. You should be going to bed and waking up at the same time every single day, even on weekends.  You can set a feasible schedule by deciding how many hours of sleep you want to get each night (experts recommend between seven and eight), what time you need to be up in the morning, and then work backwards. So if you need to be up at 6:30 am, you should aim to be in bed each night by 10:30, and have your lights out by 11 pm.

Monitor your diet.

What you eat on a daily basis plays a significant role in how you sleep at night. Things such as alcohol, caffeine, and sugar should be used sparingly, and you shouldn't consume them right before you go to bed, as they all have stimulant properties. Limit your caffeine intake to two cups of coffee per day, and stop drinking it by 3 pm. If you get hungry near bedtime, you should have a light snack (going to bed on a full stomach can be problematic for sleep) that is a combination of carbohydrates and protein. Some good choices are yogurt and granola, a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter, or a piece of cheese with a couple of crackers.

Seek out chiropractic care.

Certain spinal problems can ultimately lead to troubled sleep. Your chiropractic practitioner may be able to mitigate these issues with regular chiropractic adjustments.
