Are You at Risk for Diabetes?
By Stephen R. Farris
How many times have you skipped breakfast? Probably more times than you can remember. How many times have you gotten less than the suggested 8 hours of sleep, maybe two or three and went back to work, only to repeat the process more than a few times per week? If you're like the average American, you're probably not alone in that department.
The fact is, you're putting yourself at a higher risk of developing diabetes, along with a few other habits you might not be aware of.
Skipping Breakfast
According to a 2019 article by the Journal of Nutrition, people who skip out on breakfast are more posed to develop diabetes than those who take time to eat a morning meal. Eating breakfast could cause you to overeat throughout the rest of the day, versus those who did consume a morning meal. For those who did, usually maintain a lower body mass index.
Sitting for Too Long
If you commute to work, chances are you're stuck in traffic a few hours each day. That means you're sitting in your vehicle longer than 30 minutes at a time without the ability to get up and move around for a few minutes before resuming your drive. If you work at a desk all day, chances are you don't get up and stretch, take a short walk, or move around every 30 minutes. The longer period you sit, the more you set yourself up for becoming a diabetic.
Loss of Sleep
Most of us suffer from insomnia occasionally, but if it's a regular event more than a few nights per week, it can cause damaging effects to your body. Lack of sleep on a regular basis can cause:
- Hormone levels to get out of balance
- Cause the body to produce more stress level hormones
- Higher blood glucose levels
Other factors that could lead to diabetes is the consumption of highly processed foods on a regular basis, smoking, and too much alcohol.
