Summer Vacation Means Hungry Kiddos
By Stephen R. Farris
As a parent, you might have mixed feelings as schools start to let kids out for summer vacation. That means -- especially if you have teens who can stay by themselves during the day -- you'll need to stock up the pantries with plenty of food and snacks.
With the kids at home at least for the next couple of months or so, they're going to be hungry most of the time after those long sessions of gaming or hanging out with friends. And yes, you'll probably end up with a few extra kids once in a while during the summer months.
But instead of the usual sodas, chips, and other junk food that kids usually go for, why not switch them up with some of these items instead? Here are a few examples that will ensure your kids are eating more nutritious during summer vacation (most of these are quick and easy to make or can be made the day before):
- Apple and nut butter sandwiches
- Cashew, almond, cherry and dark chocolate trail mix
- Humus jars
- Mozzarella and cherry tomato skewers
- Bento snack boxes
- Apple and almond butter oats
- Chocolate no-bake energy bites
- Peanut butter and jelly chia pudding
- Veggie, cheese and egg muffins
- Deviled eggs
- Chicken salad with apple, cranberry, and walnuts
- Tuna and cheddar bites
- Banana oatmeal muffins
- Guacamole, veggies, and tortilla chips
- Cheese, apple, and grape skewers
If no time to make snacks, you can always get these:
- Trail mix, nuts, and seeds
- Granola and/or protein bars
- Cheese sticks
- Turkey sticks
- Healthy chips
- Dried fruit
Give some of these a try.
