What No One Tells You about Working Out
By Sara Butler
Exercising isn’t pretty. You get sweaty, your hair might get a little crazy, the locker rooms don’t smell that great and you see a lot of things in them that are difficult to put out of your mind. Whether you’re returning to exercise after a long absence or starting from scratch, there are few things it’s time you knew about – things no one ever says but hold true about working out. When you know what to expect, then you know how to handle them when they pop up. That means fewer barriers for you along your way to a healthy fitness routine.
Have a Laundry Strategy
Exercise means you’re going to sweat, which is great for your mind and body but can create some really smelly gym clothes. You may find the laundry routine you use for your other clothes won’t quite cut it with your gym laundry, so you need a new strategy. A few technical tips for your workout duds include:
- Washing them right away – Don’t let sweaty clothes linger in the laundry basket. Instead, wash them right away or dry them out before tossing them in the hamper.
- Pre-soak – You need to pre-soak your clothes in vinegar for about 30 minutes before washing. This will help cut down on the stink!
- Use baking soda – Baking soda is a great addition to laundry and helps to remove odors too. Try adding half a cup to your load.
Parts of You Will Bounce
When you’re getting your exercise groove on, things are going to move around. It can make you feel a bit awkward, but understand that it’s just the way your body moves, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about! If you want to avoid bounce, make sure to invest in the right compression workout gear in order to keep it in place. The right gear will also help to cut down on chafing, which can be a real pain when you’re working out.
There’s a Learning Curve
You’re not going to walk into the gym and just know what to do. Even the people who look like they know what they’re doing had to start somewhere. So, give yourself a break and understand that working out is a learning process. Keep at it and in no time you will be one of those people who really looks like they know what’s going on.
