Unusual Signs You're Dehydrated
By Sara Butler
Many people assume that if they're not getting enough water each day, then they'll simply feel thirsty. While thirst can definitely be a sign that you need more water, there are plenty of other subtle signs that you need to drink up. Here are a few of the most unusual signs your body displays if you're dehydrated.
Bad Breath
Your saliva does a lot for you. One of the most important things it does is control the growth of bacteria in your mouth. If you're not getting enough water to make enough saliva, then the bacteria in your mouth can grow out of control and cause bad breath.
If you notice your breath is kicking and you've not eaten a lot of garlic lately, then it may mean you need to have more water.
Dry Skin
Another sign of dehydration is dry skin. You may also notice that if you grab some skin and give it a light pinch, it doesn't smooth out right away. That's a telltale sign that you need to add more water to your daily routine.
Craving Sweets
Dehydration can impact the liver because your liver needs water to function properly. One of the most important functions of the liver is to release the stored glucose your body needs for energy. When it can't do that adequately because you're dehydrated, then your body will start to crave other sources of energy such as sugar. It's your body's way of saying it needs fueling -- but instead of reaching for some candy, have some water instead.
Headaches
Dehydration headaches can arise even if you're only mildly dehydrated and that dehydration can trigger migraines if you're susceptible to them. Of course, there are other things that can cause headaches, but if you notice a headache coming on, then try drinking a glass of water to see if it helps.
How to Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated doesn't take a whole lot of work on your part, you simply need to be more mindful about drinking water. To make it easy, make sure you have your water bottle on your person all the time and experiment with different flavorings of water, such as lemons or mint, to help give your water a tasty kick and make it more appetizing for you. You can also eat more water each day by choosing fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks over prepacked ones.
