Better Sleep May Increase Productivity

By Tom Herrin

There is always both concern and awareness of the productivity of people in any job.  Many companies spend countless hours and volumes of money looking for ways to help increase productivity.  Sometimes it simply comes down to helping the individual to be more alert and healthier.  There are a number of good programs available to assist in this effort, but often one of the biggest determiners is sleep.  Many people end up being deprived of adequate sleep, some by choice and others by circumstance.  Sleep can be a major factor in whether or not people are able to successfully fulfill their responsibilities.

Sleep Can Be A Big Thing In A Job

With the number of places that have shift work, helping people to make adjustments and get sleep is a big deal.  When people rotate, they can have a lot of problems.  If they can make the adjustments well, everyone wins.  Sleep can help to prevent accidents at home, in the car, or at work.  It can also help to reduce stress and depression both.  These are important in helping people to be able to do well in jobs as well as at home.  Sleep can also slow inflammation and help in weight control.  These factors can support better health.

Kids Need Sleep For School, Too

Whether or not parents will admit it, children have pretty important jobs by attending school successfully.  When they get the sleep they need, they will be able to focus their attention better.  Far too many kids are identified with attention problems today.  Better sleep may be a good part of the solution.  Sleep can also help them to be more creative and perform mental functions such as math.  It can sharpen memory.  For those in athletics, it can help them to maximize their potential.  A child who is tired is not typically going to be accurate or fast.

Improve Sleep One Thing At A Time

You pretty much have to experiment to see what works for you.  Caffeine can cause problems for many people.  Lighting and sound can help or hurt.  Eating too much or too late can cause sleeplessness.  Exercise too close to bedtime can keep you awake while at other times it can help you relax.  Check your bedding, room arrangement, and room temperature.  You may surprise yourself at how much you can increase your productivity with better sleep.
