Chiropractic Guidance for Bikes and Blades
By Brandi Goodman
Riding bikes and rollerblading are two common summer activities. Many people simply head out without any thought past wanting to have some fun and maybe get a little exercise. Some chiropractic guidance is needed for both bikes and blades because each requires considerable leg strength and balance and can quickly result in pain if you aren't careful.
Bikes
Bike riding can be done by all ages. Tots start out on small bikes with training wheels while adults can get larger bikes with numerous speed settings and other options. No matter the age, it's important that anyone wanting to ride be adequately prepared. This is especially true if you plan on going on any sort of trail ride or longer excursion. You need to stretch your body and ensure it's prepared for the long ride ahead.
It's also wise to bring a water bottle along so you can stay hydrated. Stop often to take a break and get a drink of water. Hydrated joints will be less likely to injure and better able to maintain their flexibility. This will result in less pain.
Think wisely about the shoes you choose to wear when you ride. A pair of flip-flops isn't a good idea. You want a sturdy pair of athletic shoes that will keep your feet comfortable on the pedals. They should grip the pedals well and not have your feet slipping off easily, which can result in some serious discomfort for the legs and feet.
Blades
Rollerblading is an even tougher activity. You don't have the handlebars of a bike to hold onto, and instead have to use your full body to keep yourself stable. You better be sure to stretch well before you put on your rollerblades so your joints are prepared. Stretch out your hamstrings, quads, and the rest of your lower body so you are less likely to experience pain or injury.
You also need to be sure you're skating with your head held high. Look forward at all times. This helps to keep your neck straight and also ensures you're paying attention to your surroundings. You don't want to crash into something or someone in front of you because you were too busy looking down.
Both biking and blading are excellent activities for the summer. However, you need to be sure you're keeping chiropractic recommendations in mind so you can perform these activities safely. Bikes and rollerblades each require balance and leg strength. If you experience discomfort when you're finished, it may be wise to stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for an assessment.
