Health Goals You Should Rethink

By Sara Butler

It’s incredibly important to choose health goals that motivate you. But they also need to be appropriate for your current fitness level and health, as well as being realistic. Going from a couch potato to Ironman may sound like a great goal in your head, but the reality may not fit your lifestyle or match your physical capabilities. In fact, goals that aren’t well thought out may do more harm to your health than good. Here are a few health goals you may have on your list that need to be rethought.

Signing Up for a Marathon

Running a marathon is an extreme fitness goal. While this type of event can help motivate you to work toward a goal and get in shape, it’s certainly not an activity for beginners.

If you’re new to exercise and just to get into the swing of things, then signing up for something drastic such as a marathon is a great way to get injured or burnout. Consider starting out smaller by signing up for a 5K. Smaller goals help to get your feet wet, then you can always reassess later if a marathon or some other race is right for you.

Cutting Out “Bad” Food

The truth of the matter is that foods are neither good nor bad -- they’re just food. Some foods can be unhealthy if eaten too much or too often, but there’s also nothing wrong with enjoying some foods in moderation. If you totally swear off something you enjoy eating from time to time, then the only thing you may accomplish is driving yourself crazy!

Being a Weekend Warrior

You may think that only exercising on the weekend and making up for lost time during the week while you do it by going hard is a great idea, but it’s actually a much better idea to spread workouts out over the week instead of simply packing it into two days.

Why is this a bad idea? Well, taking four or five days off in a row will not help you retain your fitness gains. Plus, you risk harming yourself physically and mentally by doing too much at once. Even busy people need to find time to squeeze in a workout, even if it means taking just 10 minutes a day. Spread your workout out so you can stay healthy and meet your goals.

You need goals in order to keep moving forward, but remember that the kind of goals you set for yourself will make all the difference!
