Dr. Katheryn Barriera Lopez, D.C. is a Chiropractor at Willow Lawn

Hello everyone! My name is Dr. Katheryn Barriera-López. I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. I moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2015 where I completed my doctorate at Life University and met my husband. Our family grew and brought us here to Richmond, Virginia. We have two beautiful little boys and one on the way. They are the greatest inspirations of my life.

Chiropractic is more than my profession, chiropractic is my lifestyle! It’s the faithfulness of believing that everything we need is already inside of us. My goal is to encourage everyone to make health our priority and not to wait to be in pain to take care of ourselves. I love to help people feel great and be able to do the things they love the most.

Hablo español as well!!

I can’t wait to meet you!

Dr. Stephen Black, D.C. is a Chiropractor at Willow Lawn

Dr. Stephen Black, D.C., is a dedicated chiropractor with nearly 20 years of experience in the field. Originally from Curwensville, Pennsylvania, he was a multi-sport athlete in high school, competing in both wrestling and football. After graduating high school in 1992, he received a wrestling scholarship to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Inspired by his on-campus chiropractor at Liberty University, Dr. Black decided to explore Life University in Marietta, Georgia. During his time at Life University, he completed the undergraduate program to fulfill prerequisite requirements before entering the graduate Doctorate of Chiropractic program. He graduated from Life University in 2004, and completed his board certifications shortly after.

Dr. Black began his chiropractic career in Pennsylvania, practicing south of Pittsburgh and later in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Seeking to further develop his adjusting skills, he accepted a position in Georgia. He then spent 11 years practicing in Woodbridge, Virginia. He has now practiced chiropractic for over 20 years.

In 2009, he married his wife, and they enjoy spending time together when he is not working. His hobbies include visiting the beach, where he finds a profound connection to the ocean. He and his wife also enjoy karaoke. Dr. Black has a strong interest in nutrition and vitamins, emphasizing the importance of fruits, vegetables, and vitamins in reducing inflammation. He explains that inflammation, characterized by cortisol, fibrotic tissue, and collagenase, is a primary target of chiropractic treatment, causing pain and discomfort. He aims to educate his patients on managing inflammation while providing adjustments and therapies.

Dr. Stephanie Hertless, D.C. is a Chiropractor at Willow Lawn

Dr. Stephanie Hertless is a native of Virginia. Having been a competitive swimmer herself led her to seek out chiropractic care when she was just 16 years old. The results had such a positive impact on her life that it led her to pursue a career as a Chiropractor. The journey began with completing work as one of the first Certified Chiropractic Assistants in Virginia. After three years of working as a C.C.A. and a student in undergrad, she moved to Bluefield, Virginia to finish her major in Biology; earning her Bachelors of Science. Later, she attended Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC and graduating in 2017 with her Doctorate of Chiropractic. Dr. John Robinson, D.C. is a Chiropractor at Willow Lawn

After practicing in California, North Carolina, Colorado, and New Mexico, Dr. John is finally back home in his native Virginia. He was raised in the Cumberland Mountains in Virginia’s southwest corner, and he is honored to serve the people of Richmond after 20 years of study and practice.

His interest in physical medicine began while working through his college years as a physical therapy aide. He assisted patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and even private homes with restoring their independence. So impressed with the power of helping people with mobility issues, he found his graduate research in animal psychology at William and Mary was just not as satisfying and began his path toward becoming a chiropractor.

He has been in chiropractic practice since graduating from Life West in Hayward, CA in 2007. He joined The Joint Chiropractic team in 2019 and loves the fast-paced walk-in model. Through the Joint, he can help more people than he ever could have in solo practice. This is a model where the chiropractic adjustment is fundamental to health and well-being.

In his downtime, he and his husband love being outdoors as much as possible. During the pandemic, they explored nearly every corner of Colorado where you can disburse camp almost anywhere. Their two senior dogs, Winston and Salem, have been through every adventure with them and all enjoying Richmond as home.

Artem Rip is a Wellness Coordinator at Willow Lawn

Born and raised in Richmond, Artem has called the city home for 18 years. He joined The Joint Chiropractic after experiencing back pain himself and wanting a part-time job where he could learn more from doctors while helping others. Now, as a Wellness Coordinator, Artem finds it incredibly rewarding to see patients return feeling noticeably better after just a few visits.

Chiropractic care has made a big difference in Artem’s own life—relieving the daily back pain that once made school uncomfortable. Outside of work, he enjoys playing video games as a way to unwind and escape from stress.

If he could have dinner with anyone? Cristiano Ronaldo, Eldzhey, and Bill Gates.

Raki Alston is a Wellness Coordinator at Willow Lawn

Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Raki brings warmth, energy, and a passion for connection to her role as Wellness Coordinator. Inspired by conversations with Dr. Taylor, she joined The Joint Chiropractic to help people feel better and build lasting relationships with patients. Her favorite part of the job? Seeing the look of relief on patients’ faces as pain melts away.

When she’s not at the clinic, you’ll likely find her enjoying a good book at Barnes & Noble, sipping Kokee Tea, or spending time outdoors with her daughter. A self-described risk taker who finds comfort in self-love, Raki believes in taking care of yourself first so you can show up for others.

Three words that describe her: relief, enjoyable, creative. Favorite role models? Angela Bassett, Regina Hall, and Taraji P. Henson. Her advice: “Don’t expect every chiropractic visit to look like what you see online—but do expect to feel better!”

Valda Vaughn is a Senior Wellness Coordinator at Willow Lawn

Valda, known to many as “Val,” is the Senior Wellness Coordinator for The Joint Chiropractic’s Richmond locations. Originally from Lynchburg, VA, she made the move to Richmond in 2021. While initially searching for a job in healthcare, she found something more meaningful at The Joint—a place where lives are improved through natural, consistent chiropractic care.

What Valda loves most about her role is witnessing the relief on patients’ faces after an adjustment. She takes pride in being part of the better moments in her patients’ weeks and considers that a true gift.

Outside of work, Valda enjoys de-stressing by coloring in intricate detail with her Ohuhu 320 marker set or making clay magnets. She often reminds patients that consistency is key—just ten minutes a week can make a big difference in spinal health.

A fun fact? Valda has a unique ability to remember names based on how people make her feel—and all her music playlists are organized by mood.
