Dr. Rick Shand is a board certified chiropractic physician with 18 years of clinical experience. He has been entrusted with the health and care of some of the finest professional and Olympic athletes as well as weekend warriors and Average Joes.
His passion for chiropractic began while attending college at Northern Arizona University with his sights firmly on medical school. It took getting kicked in the head (literally!) for Dr. Shand to change his mind about becoming a medical doctor and pursue chiropractic instead. Dr. Shand describes what happened as follows:
“Back in college, martial arts was my thing. I was passionate about the training and competition and I was pretty good at it. One day while practicing for a big competition, I took a kick to the side of the head (as my always-so-compassionate instructor said, “ya shoulda ducked…”). The head pain was intense, but by the next day I was having unbearable neck pain that shot right into my arm. It was so painful that I could barely even dress myself. After a few days of taking prescription drugs, I found myself getting no better. A second trip to the doctor ended with a new prescription, a pat on the back, and an “I’m sorry, there’s nothing more we can do for you, son.” I felt so hopeless. Besides the constant agonizing pain, my dreams of winning the big competition were being crushed before my eyes.”
“Eventually, a friend of mine convinced me to give their doctor a try. This new doctor did an exam, and then ‘adjusted’ my spine. The adjustment didn’t hurt, it actually felt good. I got relief, and I could use my arm again and was able to compete after all. That doctor happened to be a chiropractor. To be honest, before that I didn’t even think of chiropractors as real doctors…but it was the only thing that worked for me! It worked so well for me, and I was so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I saw in his office, that I decided that I wanted to be a chiropractor myself.“ And the rest is history!
Dr. Shand has dedicated his career to patient centered care. His focus is not only to decrease their pain, but also improve function and promote over-all health and wellbeing so they can enjoy their lives to the fullest.
In his spare time, Dr. Shand enjoys travelling and hiking with his wife and teenage son…and if it’s winter time, you’ll mostly likely find him snowboarding on the slopes.
Dr. Joe joined our team in April 2019. He grew up in Canby, Oregon, but lived in several other states including Connecticut and Maryland in order to see more of the country with his wife before coming back home to the Pacific Northwest.
When asked of his favorite thing about being a chiropractor he said, “Helping people get out of pain and see them get better with treatment.” Dr. Joe was first drawn to The Joint because he had seen the frustrations of other clinics and appreciated how this model made chiropractic care accessible to patients.
When not in the clinic, Dr. Joe loves golfing, movie trivia, hiking, and spending time outdoors with his sons. In fact, if he weren’t a chiropractor, he thinks he’d likely be working outdoors with the Forest Service. He says, “the fact that you can find anything in less than an hour- you can be on the beach, in the mountains, anywhere. Most places don’t have that” is his favorite aspect of living in the Seattle area.
Dr. Joe loves his family and considers his proudest accomplishment to be seeing the little people his kids are turning into. As he put it, “kindness comes from children.” And fun fact about him, Dr. Joe was able to convince his sons he is Batman.
Dr. Matt attended Elmhurst College where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Physiology. He then attended National University Health Sciences in Chicago to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. He first started with The Joint Chiropractic in Nashville, TN in 2017. He and his wife had always wanted to move west, and in 2019 they came to Washington where she got a fellowship as a Speech Language Pathologist and he joined the Washington Joint Chiropractic family.
He chose to become a chiropractor because he’s always been interested in non-invasive treatments to help with quality of life. When asked about his favorite part of being a chiropractor, Dr. Matt said he loves helping people feel and live better.
Outside of work, he loves exploring the Pacific Northwest through hiking and camping trips, playing soccer, and walking along Alki Beach with his wife. He loves living up here because there are lots of trails for hiking and Seattle is such a diverse place with lots to offer.
Dr. Matt says he is most proud of becoming a chiropractic doctor. In his words, “That wasn’t easy.”
A couple fun facts about Dr. Matt is that he moved to the United States from Krakow, Poland in 2005 and he can roll his tongue.
