Hiking the Safe Way
By Donna Stark
Whether it's just for a quick one-mile loop or a full-day hike, trekking through nature is a great way to get outdoors for your daily exercise! And it's a fun way to exercise too because it can be modified for practically anyone! So grab your spouse and children, invite your friends and coworkers, or forget them all and meet some new people in a hiking club! Just go outside and take advantage of the beautiful summer weather. But wait! Before you take a step out of your door, make sure you are fully aware of the precautions you need to take. Sure, hiking seems easy enough, but you still want to hike smart! Take a look.
Choose an Appropriate Hike
Know everyone's fitness level. This includes knowing the physical abilities of those who are going with you and whether or not the hike you choose is appropriately matched. You may have to stick to those trails that are suited to the limitations of your "weakest" group member just to be safe.
Know the Trail
Familiarize yourself with the trail before you set out. Be sure to review a map of the area to be hiked, learn where both the entrance and the exit to the trail are, and calculate the time needed to complete the trail so you aren't taken by surprise. Let someone know where you'll be hiking and when you plan to be back, and don't venture off the plotted route.
Pack Wisely
Be sure to include everything you need, but try to pack as lightly as you can (you may need to employ a little bit of strategy with this one). The heaviest items should be your water and food and perhaps if the hike is short enough, that's all you will need. But if you are planning on staying out longer, consider these other items as well.
- Flashlight
- Spare batteries
- Map and compass
- Whistle
- First aid kit
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Emergency shelter (some weigh as little as a couple of ounces)
Dress Appropriately
You must check the weather and dress appropriately for the conditions you will be hiking in. This includes bringing along extra gear if the forecasts predict a need to do so and dressing in ways to protect yourself from ticks if need be. If ticks are a concern, invest in repellent clothing, tuck your pants into your socks, wear a long-sleeved shirt, and cover your head with a hat. Always check your body after your hike as well!
Have Fun
There are so many different types of trails to take advantage of this summer! And as long as you plan accordingly, there shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't have the time of your life enjoying the best of what Mother Nature has to offer! So head outdoors, hike smart, and have fun!
