Stop Hibernating and Get Moving!

By Donna Stark

Just in case your family and friends haven't told you ... you are not an animal. So turn on the lights, take off those fuzzy pajamas, and head out into the world! Sure, the days are short and the air is chilly, but you have been sitting around, doing nothing, for far too long! And it's not doing your body or your health any good. It's time to find your motivation. It's time to get out of hibernation mode. But more importantly, it's time to start moving!

Pajamas, Television, and Hot Chocolate

So, this is what you have been up to? Pajamas, television, and hot chocolate? Maybe even a plate or two of homemade cookies as well? Those things certainly make for a great evening, but they should never make for an entire season. If you are avoiding exercise because the weather is making things frightful, take a look at the list below. There are some great suggestions for activities that may just keep you moving.

  • Join a gym - There are many advantages of joining a gym during the winter months. The biggest advantage is that it is heated and you won't have to worry about working out in the cold, but that's not all. Gyms are also filled to the brim with fitness machines, swimming pools, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and more!
  • Hit the mall - Fitness experts recommend getting at least 10,000 steps a day and malls are the perfect place to do so. It doesn't even matter if you like shopping or not. Just lace up your shoes and head out!
  • Join a class - Whether it's boxing, yoga, Pilates, or dance, joining a physically active class during the winter is a great way to keep your body in shape! And if you want to make it even more fun, invite some friends or family to join you. You will be able to exercise and socialize at the same time!

Staying Active During Winter

Hibernation only looks good on those cute forest animals, so don't use the cold weather as an excuse to stop exercising. Find something that you really enjoy doing and keep at it. And if you become bored with your workouts after a while, just try something new. The key idea here is to get off the couch, put the cookies away, and keep moving!
