Stopping Holiday Stress in Its Tracks

By Brandi Goodman

It's all too easy to become depressed during the holidays. Your to-do list can quickly become overwhelming and cause significant stress. This can take a toll on both your mind and body. Stop holiday stress in its tracks by utilizing a few helpful tips.

Don't Take on Too Much

You're allowed to say "no". You don't have to attend every event, plan several parties, and take care of everything yourself. You should avoid taking on too much and only manage the few tasks you truly know you can handle. Overloading your plate with things to do will only make it harder to get any of them accomplished. Choose a few of your favorites and do no more.

Let Others Help

Too often we try to get things done on our own, thinking it can all be handled. You need to let others help when you realize you're struggling and have far more to accomplish than you have time. Let your family and friends know you're having a hard time and need their assistance. Decorating the house together can be a joyful bonding time, whereas doing it alone can feel depressing and lonesome.

Stick to Your Budget

Money is the culprit of stress for many people. You may feel as though what's affordable to you isn't enough for someone else and end up spending above and beyond your means. No matter what, stick to your budget and only spend what you really can afford. That may mean dollar store presents one year, but it's the thought that counts. Even the dollar store and thrift stores have some pretty great finds that your family will love.

Stick With Your Healthy Habits

All too often the holidays become a time when people abandon their healthy habits and start employing some unhealthy options for making it through. You may find yourself forgoing exercise, drinking heavily, getting little sleep, and eating nothing but junk. Do your best to stick with your healthy habits throughout this season so the nutritional foods, water, adequate sleep, and exercise can keep your spirits boosted and your mind and body feeling well.

The holidays should be a joyous time. Don't let the anxiety and stress that often pairs with it be your downfall. Keep these tips in mind so you can stop your holiday stress in its tracks and be more likely to actually enjoy the season the way it was intended.
