Making Fitness Goals: 3 Tips to Be Successful

By Virginia Laird

Are you one of the millions who try desperately to find the right New Year’s resolution? Some of the most popular resolutions concern health and fitness. Many across the nation will set these goals yet have no idea how to actually be successful at them. While purchasing a gym membership may be the first step to success, it is far from the only thing to do when making sure to achieve your goals. Some helpful advice, offered by fitness experts include:

  • Have a plan
  • Goals should include overall health
  • Set long and short-term goals

Have a Plan

With the new year in sight, many begin to think about resolutions. While it can be a great idea to jump on this bandwagon, it is equally important to have a plan for accomplishing these goals. Fitness gurus encourage those setting goals concerning fitness to map out a plan for how to stay successful all year. Without a plan, it is easy to become distracted and lose focus on the goals you may have set for yourself.

Goals Should Include Overall Health

When looking to set resolutions for the new year, make sure to choose one or two which can improve your overall health. There is no need for it to be about dieting or spending long hours at the gym. However, a goal to increase your water consumption or to make getting enough sleep a priority can harvest a plethora of healthy benefits. Other ideas which can have lasting results on your overall health can include:

  • Eat less junk food
  • Cut back on sugar consumption
  • Drink fewer sodas
  • Walk daily

Set Long and Short Term Goals

When determining New Year’s resolutions, it is wise to have both short- and long-term goals. Short-term goals can serve as a checkpoint for the desired end result. Much research suggests that goals which can be accomplished in a matter of weeks can help maintain motivation.

Now that you have the advice needed to make sure you are successful in your New Year’s goal-setting endeavor, it is time to begin figuring out exactly what your goals will be. If you are new to the whole goal-setting idea, keep them simple. If you are a pro at it, consider setting one challenging goal. You can do it! You can be successful when you put your mind to and keep your heart in it. Good luck and may 2018 be your best year ever!
