5 Ways to Spice Up Your Picnic
By Brandi Goodman
A picnic provides an opportunity to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. It's a great option for a date, as something to do with your family, or even alone when you're in need of some quiet time. Grabbing a sandwich and some chips is quick and easy, but it isn't the picnic you deserve. Think of some ways to spice up your picnic and have a healthy and enjoyable time.
Pack a Nutritious Meal
You should be packing a nutritious meal to take along with you. Something unhealthy will leave you feeling sluggish and bloated. A healthy option will provide the energy you need to enjoy your time and return home feeling well. You can make a meal ahead and pack it in containers that fit perfectly in your picnic basket.
Grill Out
A make-ahead meal doesn't always have to be the case. You can grill out instead and make your meal right at your location. Many parks have charcoal grills available. You'll just have to bring along the charcoal and lighter fluid. You can cook up some kebabs or grill a nice piece of meat. Corn on the cob in foil and even some fruits can also be heated. This is an ideal option if you want to enjoy a meal outdoors yet don't have time to prepare your food before you head out.
Bring Bottled Water
It's easy to grab a soda pop or juice box when you're heading out for a picnic. These choices have far too much sugar, though. You should really be making sure you have bottled water for everybody. It doesn't add any calories or sugar to your meal and will help wash everything down. Water is necessary for good health. It keeps everything your body running smoothly and lubricates your joints as well so you can remain active. Sugary beverages can leave you feeling dehydrated.
Bring Along Activities
Sitting and enjoying a meal while you relax can be quite delightful. You can spice up your picnic time, however, by bringing along some activities and adding in exercise. It's truly a healthy combination. You'll get to enjoy nutritious foods and then burn off some of those calories by combining both. A Frisbee or ball are easy choices to bring along and toss to one another. If you're alone, kicking a ball around can provide a great workout.
Bike or Blade to Your Destination
Skip the car and bike or blade to your picnic destination instead. This is also a great way to get in exercise. The whole family can have fun riding together and making their way to the park or green space so you can all enjoy a meal. It's a great option to do alone as well. Your meal will be a great reward once you arrive, and you'll burn off even more calories heading home after.
Enjoy your picnic in a healthy way with some nutritious choices and activities. You can spice up your typical picnic plans in many ways. Think of what works best for you.
