Pain-free Traveling, Thanks to Your Chiropractor
By Donna Kostiew
The traveling season is right around the corner. Fall breaks, holidays, and the end of college semesters bring many people to the roads, tracks, and skies. And although the purpose for many of these trips is rest and relaxation, the journey can actually be pretty rough on our bodies … and quite frankly, a pain in the neck. Literally. Whether you are flying across the country, stuck in a car for long hours, or sleeping in a strange bed (or even worse, a pull-out sofa), you will more than likely be in an uncomfortable position for a much longer time than is good for you. This can cause issues in your spine and joints, and nobody wants to deal with the discomfort and pain that come along with that, especially during a family vacation. So why not be proactive and schedule an appointment at The Joint Chiropractic before you leave for your destination?
Keeping the Pain Away
Visiting your chiropractor before your trip helps to prepare your body for the long hours of traveling. Some of the benefits of taking this kind of proactive stance are:
- Reduction and/or elimination of joint restriction
- Less pain and discomfort at the start and throughout all of your travels
- Improved functioning of your immune system
- Better sleep and rest
The travels before we reach our destination can definitely be full of stress and conflict (flight cancellations, traffic congestion, your kids fighting over the iPad), and being in pain or discomfort will only exacerbate the issues going on around you.
Tips to Ease the Burdens of Travel
In addition to seeing your chiropractor before you leave, it is also important to take these other steps to ensure that your journey is as pain-free as possible.
- Take frequent rest breaks on long trips
- Use back supports, pillows, or neck rests while driving/flying
- Exercise/stretch your legs when possible
- Don’t overstuff your suitcase and use one with wheels
- Be mindful of the proper way to lift a suitcase
- Make sure to get enough sleep
There are so many options that we have to make our trips easier and less stressful … drive-thru coffee shops, noise cancellation headphones, fruit roll-ups and electronic devices for the kids. But the best option is to get a spinal adjustment before you head out on your adventure. Your joints, muscles and ligaments will love you for it, and in turn, you will love the rest and relaxation that will soon be coming your way.
