Tips for Good Lung Health

By Donna Stark

You use sunscreen to keep your skin healthy, you watch your posture to keep your spine healthy, and you read everything you can get your hands on to keep your brain healthy, so don't you think it's about time you start doing what is necessary to keep your lungs healthy, too? With fall allergies in the air and cold and flu season coming right around the corner, you may want to do everything you can right now to keep them functioning as best as they can. Here are some helpful suggestions on how to keep your breathing a top priority.

Deep Breathing Exercises

Unsurprisingly, deep breathing exercises are good for your lungs, so go ahead, take some deep breaths. Ideally, you should do them for a few minutes at a time throughout your day for optimal results. Deep breathing will open your lungs to their full capacity and can make it easier for you to breathe over time.

Proper Hydration

You already know that you should drink water regularly to maintain good health, but did you know that staying properly hydrated is vital for healthy lungs? Chronic dehydration can exacerbate asthma, cause breathing problems, trigger allergies, and lead to chronic bronchitis. Don't like the taste of water? Infuse it with fruits and flavorings!

Vitamins

Consuming a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods will improve the functions of all your organs, including your lungs. Vitamins C and A have been shown to help repair lung tissue and keep your respiratory system functioning at its best. Try adding some sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, oranges, kale, and kiwis to your meals.

Daily Exercise

If you need some extra motivation to get on that treadmill in the corner of your room, improved lung function is it! Engaging in cardiovascular exercise will increase your heart rate and strengthen your lungs. Try to incorporate at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise into your daily routine.

Clean Air

You may be surprised by how "polluted" your indoor air is with pet dander, dust, and other allergens. Keep the air you breathe clean by investing in an air purifier. Air purifiers with top-notch filtration have been shown to remove nearly all the particles floating in your home. It's an easy solution that will have everyone breathing better!

Optimal Lung Health

You're no stranger to healthy lifestyle habits, so making the necessary changes for better lung function will be a breeze for you! Get your lungs in perfect working order so they can do their part with keeping you healthier than ever!
