Earaches & Asthma: Chiropractic For Kids
A recent study looked at the practices of 548 chiropractors around the world, including the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and found that 21 percent of the average chiropractor’s time is spent giving treatment to children who were 18 years old or younger. Rather than seeking relief from chronic back pain, like most adults who choose chiropractic therapy, these younger patients were being treated for common conditions of childhood.
The common childhood conditions that showed a favorable response to chiropractic treatment included ear infections and asthma. While chiropractic care has been shown through research to have a number of beneficial effects on the overall general health of the body, like boosting the immune system and reducing risk for chronic pain from the lower back or neck, it’s effectiveness in treating these typical childhood health complaints isn’t so well understood.
A high rate of ear infections is a common ailment of younger people, and these incidents are most often triggered by symptoms created by the common cold, upper respiratory infection, or perhaps a sore throat. According to The National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), these ear infections are principally caused by the fact that the tiny Eustachian tubes of the ears in children are not well equipped to deal with infections. Added to this is another factor, namely that the immune systems of children aren’t as fully developed as an adult’s, having not been exposed to as many infections, and are therefore more easily compromised by pathogens.
Research shows that although medication is the most common form of treatment for children with ear infections, chiropractic care can also be surprisingly effective too. A study looked at 46 children from the ages of five and lower who had the typical symptoms associated with an ordinary ear infection, which includes ear pain and fever. A treatment schedule was designed for each affected child and was comprised of three sessions a week for the first week, two sessions a week for the second, then once a week until the ear infection was cleared up. Results showed that 93% percent of the child patients reported an improvement in the ear infections, with 75% finding relief after 10 sessions, and 43% of them becoming better after just two treatments.
Similar research has been done with children who suffer from asthma. One study looked at 36 children between ages 6 and 17 with either mild or moderate asthma. After 20 chiropractic sessions in three months all of the children reported having their quality of life substantially improved by chiropractic care.
