Eat Less Without Noticing

By Donna Kostiew

So the major eating holidays are over now and many of us are glancing down at our bellies wondering what on earth happened? For most of us, this is a time where we pledge to hit the gym more often, to get back on track with our diets, and to be consistent once again with the amount of food we eat. For some, this isn’t difficult but for others, it can be very hard to do. So in addition to eating nutritious foods and exercising, establishing healthy eating habits sooner than later can make all the difference in the world.

Four Ways to Eat Less Without Noticing

Of course you want to choose a healthy diet, but even with doing so, you may still find yourself overeating. Here are some hidden ways to eat less while still getting the nutrition you need.

Use smaller plates/taller glasses – Filling smaller plates up with food and using taller glasses is an easy way to have you and your family eat and drink less without noticing. The smaller plates and taller glasses always look as if they are carrying more even if it is less or the same amount of food you would have normally served.

Eat protein for breakfast - Breakfasts high in protein have been proven to suppress appetite and reduce eating throughout the day. So skip the waffles and make some eggs instead.

Keep snacks out of sight - Studies have shown that people will eat more if food is visible and easy to reach, so keep it hidden. And the harder the food is to get to, the less likely it will be eaten, as well. So if you absolutely have to buy those chips to avoid civil unrest in the family, establish a rule to keep them out of sight and on a high shelf in the pantry.

Never eat from the package – Leave the package in the pantry and serve your food on a plate. We tend to eat more than twice the amount of food when we mindlessly eat from that bag of chips or container of cookies, especially while watching TV. The point is that you want to know exactly how much food you are going to eat before you take that first bite. And then stop eating when the plate is empty.

It is hard to not overeat during the holidays, in fact, it’s pretty much a guarantee that it will happen. The problem with overeating is when it continues throughout the rest of the year and causes other health issues. But these tips, along with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, can prevent that from happening. And if you do have problems with losing weight or issues with exercising, see your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic.
