Once upon a time, diet soda was all the rage. Without the mounds of sugar found in regular soda, people were flocking to the diet counterparts in the name of health. But as time passed, even diet soda came into question. Just as quickly as people switched to diet, people began to switch back. And the continual back and forth has never really stopped. So what's the deal? Is diet better? Or should we stick to the real deal after all? If you would like to choose wisely, take a look at these ways to tell whether diet soda is right for you.
What's the Argument for Drinking Diet?
Considering diet drinks contain zero calories, why would people be against their consumption? Mostly it boils down to the type of sugar substitute used. Years ago, the main sweetener was aspartame, which has since been proven to be incredibly damaging to health. In recent years, other options have been used including Splenda and Stevia. Those who are in favor of all natural products are generally hesitant to alternative sweeteners. But in the grand scheme, diet drinks are considered healthier now than in previous years.

So if substitute sweeteners are questionably healthy at best, what is the argument for drinking diet sodas? Shouldn't we just avoid them completely? While that might be the best choice, there are some reasons to keep diet soda in your life. If you’re looking for calorie restriction, diet is the better option (next to water, of course). Though diet drinks don’t provide any nutritional value, they won’t cut into your total calorie consumption either. For true calorie cutters, and for those who just can’t quit soda altogether, this can be the next best option for maintaining health and enjoying your weakness.

So can you still drink diet soda? In short, yes. Though quitting soda completely and sticking to water is a much better option, diet soda can keep your calories down while still allowing a little flavor in your life. In the long run, you should do whatever is best for you and your health goals. But if soda is your weakness, switching to diet may be the best option for keeping your mouth satisfied and health on track.
