3 Tips for Picking a Backpack

By Virginia Laird

When it comes to finding the perfect backpack, most students look for something stylish and fun. However, chiropractors advise parents to be concerned with back pain when selecting the perfect bag. Although the actual bag may not cause any pain, it is necessary to make sure it is built in a way to help prevent pain when it is used correctly. There are a few things you can look for which can help your student stay free of such discomfort, including:

  • Two straps are a necessity
  • Pick a backpack with a waist strap
  • Consider a backpack that rolls

Two Straps are a Necessity

As you try to help your children fit their backpack, having (and using) two straps is necessary when trying to keep pain at bay. Chiropractors insist that having both straps adjusted properly can help evenly distribute the weight. Otherwise, the weight of a loaded backpack may cause movement in the joints of the spine, which can lead to restriction and pain. Although your children may not believe that using both straps is the cool way to carry their backpack, help encourage them to utilize them to help avoid unnecessary back pain.

Pick a Backpack With a Waist Strap

When it comes to back pain, there are many aspects of lugging a loaded backpack which can contribute to it. Backpacks move around, which puts unnecessary strain on the joints of the spine. There is value to having a waist strap on your backpack. Chiropractors teach that such a strap can help prevent the backpack from moving around. This can help take a great deal of strain off of the spine which can help prevent and manage back pain. As you help your kids shop for the perfect backpack, make sure you look for one with a waist strap.

Consider a Backpack that Rolls

One of the best things to consider when trying to prevent back pain is a backpack with wheels. This allows your back to completely avoid any tugging on the spine. Before making your purchase, make sure to check with your child's school on their policy about a backpack that rolls, as some schools do not allow these.

For children who suffer with back pain that seems to be uncontrollable, routine chiropractic care can help. If this is your child, consider starting their routine chiropractic care at The Joint Chiropractic in your community. With more than 475 locations nationwide you are sure to find one nearby.
