A Chiropractor's Guide to Playing With Toys
By Brandi Goodman
It may seem strange, but playing with toys can actually be harmful to your health. Your back and shoulders can develop an ache quickly if you're not careful and that's just one of the dangers to consider. Follow a chiropractor's guide to playing with toys and enjoy a pain-free experience. December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month after all.
Perfect Your Posture
It's fine to sit on the floor with your little ones as you race their cars or play with dolls. You need to perfect your posture in this position though and be sure you aren't sitting with a hunch in your back. Sit up straight and use a surface nearby to play more at your level. The top of a toy box may be within your reach. You can also choose to stand near a counter or table to play instead while your kiddos sit. It will help you to keep your back upright and avoid an ache.
Adjust Your Seat
Maybe it's a video game you're playing with your teen. Make sure to adjust your seat so that your feet are flat on the floor, your back is against the chair, and the screen is at eye level. You don't want to strain your body in any way by looking down or up at a device or slouching in your seat. A gaming chair is great to have because it allows for these adjustments and provides extra padding that a basic desk chair doesn't always provide.
Stretch Before Starting
As with any activity you need to be sure you're stretching before you're starting to play. This will help to keep your body limber and ensure you can go for a while. Too many parents are sitting down to play with their kids for just a few minutes because the pain sets into their backs quickly or their joints lock up. Stretch out your joints so your body is prepared and pain gets avoided.
Always think about your health and well-being in everything you do. Even if it's something as simple as playing with toys you need to consider a chiropractor's guide to safe playing so you can prevent aches and discomfort. You especially don't want some playtime with your kids to end up causing you to miss out on the many holiday celebrations you have to look forward to with them.
