Dr. Michael J. Funicello was born in Nyack, NY and raised in Mesa, AZ where he attended the University of Arizona in 1993 with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. While at the UofA, Dr. Funicello had an epiphany while studying molecular biology. He found that, “what I would be doing would keep me stuck in a lab all day. I loved studying the body and was good with my hands and a family member took me with them to the chiropractor one day and I had my first adjustment. Felt ‘something’ better about my body. That was my big light bulb moment.” Dr. Funicello then found himself in San Jose, CA, to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic West and where he obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic degree, graduating with salutatorian honors in 1997. Dr. Funicello has since moved back home to sunny Arizona where he was in private practice for over 15 years before joining The Joint Chiropractic in Tempe, AZ.
Dr. Funicello’s passion is helping others achieve their health goals by maximizing the connection between the brain and body through a well-adjusted spine, and become more alive through care. He has consistently demonstrated how regular chiropractic adjustments not only help to prevent pain and injury but also serve to promote optimal health and wellness.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Funicello has learned to serve all types of people from pregnant women and babies, to grandparents or those suffering from various pains such as sciatica pain, neck pain, lower back pain, and even migraines.
When he’s not working at The Joint Chiropractic, Dr. Funicello is either woodworking, camping, landscaping or spending time with his wife, Maria, and son, Myles at their home in Mesa, AZ.
Dr. Funicello’s personal motto is “Do what you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life!”
Dr Richard Andrus, DC was born in Logan, Utah. When he was 8 years old, he and his family moved to Glendale, California for his father to attend Chiropractic school. Growing up in the Southern California area listening to The Beach Boys was about as wonderful an experience as you could imagine.
Dr Andrus graduated from Birmingham High School in what is now Lake Balboa, California and attended Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland hills, California for his pre-chiropractic studies. He served a two-year church service mission in London, England. Having been raised in a chiropractic environment and understanding Chiropractic philosophy in regards to the restoration and maintenance of health, Chiropractic just made sense as an appealing career.
Dr Andrus attended Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in Glendale, California. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1979. He was in private practice for 25 years caring for infants to elderly patients. He spent another 18 years in a personal injury practice treating patients involved in motor vehicle and work-related injuries and accidents.
Dr Andrus joined the Joint Chiropractic in February 2023. He's excited and grateful to be practicing Wellness based chiropractic. He says " I feel I'm back to my roots.” Dr Andrus married the love of his life in 1977. They have four children and 11 grandchildren. Away from work, he enjoys spending time with his sweetheart, working around the house and family time with their children and grandchildren.
I always knew I wanted to work with people on their journey toward optimum health. From an early age I was naturally drawn to healthcare by my mother, who is a dedicated Nurse Practitioner. Even though I did not like the idea of the "Medical Model" of treating a symptom with drugs, my interest drove me to research further into natural healing. That's when I became interested in Chiropractic care.
At first, I thought Chiropractic was just about the relief of pain, but later learned it was much more. My chiropractic education at Life University in Marietta, GA taught me that nerve interference holds an important key to finding and maintaining true health. By opening up the nervous system through a gentle-low force Chiropractic adjustment, the body can communicate to each organ and system better to help restore function and provide healing from within.
This revelation brought excitement and dedication to my lifelong passion for health. As a practicing chiropractor for over 23 years, I do believe it is truly amazing when a person takes charge of their own health through alternative methods. The remarkable changes I have seen just with my patients amazes me every day.
