Tips to Enjoy Your Food
By Sara Butler
Healthy meals begin with a variety of foods on your plate. You don’t have to make major changes to your plate all at once. Instead, think about the ways you can enjoy your food as you make tiny shifts in the number of types of food you pile on your plate. Here are some tips to help you move in a healthier direction but still enjoy your food.
Take Your Time
Many people eat on the go or eat too fast, not taking the time to actually enjoy the food they’re eating. Try to be mindful as you eat, enjoying the textures, taste, and feeling of the food as you chew. This can help you tap into your hunger cue more easily so you can recognize when you’re full.
Use a Smaller Plate
This trick actually works. Instead of piling food on a large plate, use a smaller plate for your food. This can trick your eyes and help you to feel fuller with less food. You can also finish your entire plate and not feel miserable after.
Eat Out Wisely
Eating out can be a real landmine when you’re trying to make healthier choices, but it’s not impossible! Many restaurants post their nutrition information on their website, so just do a little research before you go to find out what the best options are. Make sure to choose an entrée that is broiled or baked and request sauces and dressings on the side.
Get Fruity
If you have a sweet tooth and crave dessert, then have some fruit! Berries and yogurt or pineapple and melon make great options for something sweeter at the end of your meal that isn’t full of fat and calories. Plus, fruit is nutritious, helping you to get the vitamins and minerals you need to be healthy.
Drink Water
At every meal, have a glass of water. You don’t have to down it all at once, but you should sip before, during, and after your meal. This will help keep you hydrated and help you feel fuller faster. You can go with flavored water if plain isn’t appealing to you, just make sure not to choose a water that has added sugar and a lot of extra calories.
Eating should be an activity you take pleasure from, so make sure you take the time to appreciate it!
