5 Habits Imperative to Improving Health

By Virginia Laird

There is never time to procrastinate when trying to become a healthier person; now is always a good time to begin. With that in mind, there are many things that a person can do without needing to spend a lot of money or time to start on a path to a healthier life. Some of these thing include:

  • Drink water
  • Meal plan
  • Stop smoking
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Make time to exercise

Drink Water

While many people prefer soda over water, it not the healthiest choice. The body needs water to function. Drinking enough water should be a priority for everyone. Some recommend a person should drink a minimum of eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. To be doubly sure of proper hydration, drink half your body weight in ounces.

Meal Plan

Meal planning is important as it prevents the need to reach for the junk a fast food restaurant has to offer. There are no bones about it, cooking at home is healthier than eating out. Having a plan can also save some money, as eating out is more expensive than cooking at home.

Stop Smoking

In today's society, with all the focus of healthier, clean eating and healthy lifestyle, it is difficult to believe anyone starts smoking. Once the habit is formed, smoking can be a nightmare to break. However, stopping can improve the health in a big way. Smoking can be the cause of high blood pressure, cancers, and many other illnesses. If you are struggling to stop, there are many programs available to help shake the habit at little to no cost.

Get Plenty of Sleep

As a parent of young children, uninterrupted sleep may be a thing of the past. Nevertheless, it is important that adults attempt to get enough sleep each night. Research suggests that adults should try to get at minimum of six hours of sleep each night.

Make Time to Exercise

While a person may not have an hour to spare for exercise, it is vital to make some time to work out. Research suggests as little as 20-30 minutes three to four times per week can have a great impact on a person’s health.

Hopefully you have identified several habits to improve your health that you feel you can accomplish. Although starting new habits, or kicking old ones, can be difficult, it can also be rewarding. Good luck on your path to a healthier you!
