How to Fight the After-Lunch Crash

By Genevieve Cunningham

For some reason, lunch seems to make everyone sleepy. Have you ever noticed that after-lunch crash that happens after a good meal? It’s almost impossible to get anything done! But of course, since most people are headed back to work after lunch, continued productivity is necessary. Fortunately, we’re not all doomed to suffer from droopy eyelids and yawns after lunch. If you need to beat the crash and improve productivity, take a look at these tips.

Eat Small

The bigger the meal, the more full and tired you’re going to feel when it’s over. Of course, this doesn’t mean to starve yourself. But instead of the burger, it might be better to opt for the grilled chicken. Or it might be a good idea to choose a salad for lunch. If you find that this leaves you hungry a few hours later, pack a small healthy snack (think apple or almonds) to help tide you over. A small, healthy lunch is one of the best ways to stay healthy and avoid the fatigue later in the day.

Drink More Water

Water can help you eat less, as it fills up the stomach and takes up space. But because water is so vital to our bodies, and because we never seem to drink enough, drinking more water at lunch might boost your energy levels. Before lunch, have a glass of water. During lunch, sip some more. And after lunch, drink another glass. You might be surprised at how much better and more energized you feel with just this one tip.

Take a Short Nap

If this sounds contradictory, don’t worry, a lot of people feel this way. But research shows that a super short nap (think 20 minutes) can actually give you a blast of energy and focus. It’s a power nap, and right after lunch is the perfect time to make it happen. Schedule this short little nap into your day. Turn off the office lights or find a shady spot to park your car. Just get some quick shut-eye, and all of your drowsy problems may be over.

That afternoon crash can be so hard. But if you’re prepared and have the right information, it can be easier than ever to make it through. Use these tips to beat the lull and find your energy again. With a little experimentation and some patience, you may be more alert and productive in the afternoon than ever before.
