Why You Should Really Learn to Cook

By Genevieve Cunningham

Cooking is almost a lost art. Though there are plenty of great chefs and plenty of people who can cook all sorts of delicious dishes, the population as a whole seems to have lost its knack for cooking. Unfortunately, this lost skill is causing health problems galore. Though it may not seem like a big deal, the health ramifications are more abundant than most realize. If you aren’t comfortable in the kitchen, take a look at these reasons why you should learn to cook as soon as you can.

To Save Your Health

The harsh truth is that most home cooked dinners are going to be far healthier than those bought at a restaurant. Though there are definitely some health-conscious eating establishments, the vast majority require you to eat far more calories than the same meal cooked in your kitchen. When you cook at home, you get to choose the ingredients and the calorie input. If you’re eager to save your health, lose weight, or simply maintain your current build, cooking at home is the best choice long-term.

To Save Money

Eating out is expensive. Cooking at home can save you a ton of money. While a meal out at a restaurant might cost anywhere between $10 and $30 (or more!), the same meal at home may cost a fraction of that. And you’ll probably wind up with quite a bit more as well. If finances are a concern, learning to cook might be the perfect choice.

For an Invaluable Skill

Let’s be real for a second: Cooking is a skill that lasts a lifetime. You may find yourself in a position in the future in which you really need to know how to cook. You may be in a different job, a different location, a different financial position. You may not be able to go out and buy something every night. You may need to change your diet for health reasons. Whatever the situation, it will serve you better if cooking is part of your permanent skill set.

It’s never too late to learn to cook. Anyone can do it! Join a class, watch some videos, or ask your mom. With just a little practice, you’ll be cooking delicious meals and loving the process in no time at all.
