How Pets Can Help Improve Your Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Pets are so much fun. Whether you have a dog, cat, bird, or something a little more exotic, pets can bring a lot of good into our lives. They remind us of childhood and bring friendship. But as it turns out, pets may actually be incredibly healthy for us as well. If you've been considering a furry friend, take a look at why you should definitely sign the adoption papers and bring your new pal home.

Pets Require Us to Be Active

Pets require us to get up and get moving. Some are better at this than others. Some pets -- like rodents and cats and birds -- may only require us to get up to feed and water them. Other pets -- like dogs -- may require us to take them out walking or playing. This can be really good for those who struggle to get enough exercise. With a pet, you won't be able to avoid it.

Pets Help Stifle Loneliness

Pets offer companionship like no other. They're always there for love, support, and friendship. All you have to do is take care of them and treat them well. Research shows that the companionship of a pet can help stifle loneliness. And since loneliness is incredibly bad for mental health, getting rid of that feeling is crucial for good health and feeling your best.

Pets Bring Responsibility

You have to agree to a certain amount of responsibility when you get a pet. Why? Because you have to keep them alive. And on top of that, you should be trying to make their life pleasurable. Responsibility is a good thing. It makes us more self-aware. It forces us to think of others besides ourselves. Over time, being responsible is good for health, and for your life in general. Since you'll need to be responsible for the rest of your life, getting a pet is a great and rewarding way to tackle this skill.

If you've been considering getting a pet, go for it. It can bring so much good into your life. But before you do, make sure you're ready for the commitment. Pets are hard work, but with the right attitude, they can bring better health and happiness into your life starting now.
