Smile for Success at Work

By Tom Herrin

Do you ever take a look around you to see what kind of people surround you?  The expressions on their faces may tell quite a bit about them.  Whether they realize it or not, people send a pretty good message through the look they have on their faces.  It not only lets others know a little about their moods, it also tells a story about their health in general.  The other side of that coin is that people can have an effect on all of those things by changing their expression themselves.  Those who smile may be able to take greater control of several things in their lives, including their health.

It Can Do Big Things For Health

Smiling can help relax the face and body.  By doing so, the immune system is better able to react to outside factors that can cause illness.  It also can slow the heart rate and reduce stress.  Smiling can help release endorphins that can help to dull pain.  According to one study, those who smile more may be able to expect to live as much as seven years longer than those who don’t.

It Can Make People Look Better

There is no doubt that looks are a matter of personal opinion, but there is quite a bit of supporting evidence to make a case for smiling.  Studies have shown that men are more likely to approach women who smile than those who make eye contact with them.  At least half the time people smile, others will smile back in return.  It is an appealing way of nonverbal communication.  It has also been stated that those who smile may look as much as three years younger.  Pretty much everyone wants to look younger.

It May Get You Ahead In Your Job

Without question, those who smile seem more productive and are more likely to be offered advances in their jobs.  When you are happy, work seems less like a chore and more like something enjoyable.  Your mood is often better and lifts the moods of those who around you, as well.  Smiling is a good motivator and part of creating good relationships with others.  Co-workers and supervisors alike tend to respond in a positive manner to those who smile and help make a more inviting environment.  If you don’t do it now, give it a try.  If you already do, smile more.  It can improve your health and make you a greater success.
