You Never Know When You Will Need a Walking Aid

By Tom Herrin

One of the things most people could use more of is preparedness.  It is often a topic of discussion around storm season, but there is much more to it than that.  Preparedness can cover a wide variety of things.  The point is to have items available for a time of need.  Everyone should have a first aid kit and an evacuation plan.  Having basic food and water on hand can help in some unexpected situations.  For common accidents, it may be helpful to have some kind of walking aids around and the knowledge of how to use them.

There Are Various Types of Walking Aids

Many people have some kind of walking aid on hand, and it seems that just about every child who has seen a pair of crutches has tried them out.  They may have discovered quickly how difficult they can be to use.  While they may be the most common, there are others as well.  A cane is not just for the feeble.  They may be used to help with balance, but they are also useful for helping people who are recovering from foot or leg injuries.  They can slowly begin applying weight back onto an injured part.  Another item that seems to be used more is a walker.  They appear to come in an increasing variety of types and are used to either help stabilize someone or take a large portion of weight off of the entire lower body.

Using Crutches Correctly Requires a Little Practice

People normally use crutches when they need to keep all or most of their weight off of one leg or foot.  The top of the crutch should be an inch or two below the armpits when standing.  The hand grips should be near the hips or waist, and most of the weight should be carried with the hands.  Making sure there is a good tip on each crutch can help to prevent more injury.  When people use them, they should reach and touch the ground together with both at the same time.  The next step should be with the good foot.  Using them may be for a short period of time but will help someone to get by after one of those common accidents.

Be Vigilant in Making Your Home Safe

The truth is that many accidents happen in our homes.  This may be partly due to the fact that we are so comfortable there and fail to check for problems.  Cords and debris are some of the usual culprits as trip hazards.  Spills can often be another problem as they can cause people to slip and fall.  It is a good idea to have some kind of walking aid around and an understanding of how to best use them.  Checking to see that our homes are free from possible things that may contribute to accidents may be an even greater need.  Plan ahead and be better prepared to enjoy good health.
